Ms. Kelly 8 th Grade Health

 With a partner, discuss the following questions (one partner should scribe):  What does it mean to make a good decision?  Do you tend to make good decisions in life?  What (or who) influences the decisions you make? Why?

 Heredity/genetics (20%)  Environmental (20%)  Lack of access to healthcare (10%)  Lifestyle (50%)

 Behaviors or actions that you (mostly) have control over, which lead to injury/illness  In small groups, list as many of these factors as you can think of….

 Smoking/tobacco  Alcohol and other drugs  Risky sexual behaviors  Depression/Suicide  Homicide/Violence  Poor nutrition  Lack of physical activity  Accidents (unintentional injuries)

 Brainstorm prevention strategies for the lifestyle risk factors we discussed last class…  Ex: One way to prevent yourself from succumbing to tobacco-related illnesses is to not start smoking in the first place…

BEHAVIOR/FACTORPREVENTION STRATEGY 1.) Smoking 2.) Alcohol/drug abuse 3.) Risky sexual behaviors 4.) Poor nutrition 5.) Lack of exercise 6.) Homocide/violence 7.) Depression/suicide 8.) Accidents (unintentional injuries)

 We have control over most of these behaviors, yet we still have individuals that become victims of their effects…. WHY??

PEER PRESSURE? MEDIA? ADVERTISING? LACK OF KNOWLEDGE? INVINCIBILITY? PRESSURES FROM HOME?

 We have CHOICES  Knowledge can equate power if we are willing…
