TYPES OF LEADERSHIP

Autocratic This style is used when leaders tell their employees what they want done and how they want it accomplished, without getting the advice of their followers. Some of the appropriate conditions to use it is when managers have all the information to solve the problem, they are short on time, and their employees are well motivated. Most common in factories, fast food, armed forces and police. Direct orders are given and are to be followed Views and opinions of subordinates are not taken inot account by managers who just issue orders and expect them to be followed

Democratic Democratic leaders offer guidance to group members, but they also participate in the group and allow input from other group members. Employees have greater involvement in decision- making Democratic persuasive: Leader has made decision and then persuades subordinates into the best option Democratic consultative: the Leader consults with subordinates then makes a decision Video here on the democratic leadership style of Richard Branson herehere

Paternalistic Leader decides what is best for employees Links with Mayo – addressing employee needs Based on a parent/child relationship Still little delegation A softer form of authoritarian leadership Employees are consulted but leader makes the final decision Article on Cadbury herehere

laissez-faire This style of leadership is where employees can carry out activities and make decisions freely They work in a very relaxed environment and have little direction and guidelines Advantage; superb in creative environments such as web designers or artists Disadvantage; lack of supervision may lead to poor productivity and lack of motivation Article here with case studieshere Steve Jobs of Apple – a Laissez-Faire Leader here and another video here here
