Isaiah’s Ordination and Deployment Isaiah 6

What does it say? Observation What does it mean? Interpretation What does it mean to me? Application

2Timothy, 3:16-17 “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man(woman) of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

-U SE THE B IBLE TO DETERMINE THE MEANING OF B IBLE TEXTS INSTEAD OF RELYING ON OTHER SOURCES TO INTERPRET THE B IBLE. -I NTERPRET THE PASSAGE IN ITS IMMEDIATE CONTEXT BEFORE REFERRING TO OTHER PASSAGES, SUCH AS CROSS - REFERENCES AND SUPPORTING VERSES.

-I NTERPRET EACH PASSAGE ACCORDING TO ITS ORDINARY MEANING IN ITS ENTIRE CONTEXT R EMEMBER P ASTOR C HUCK, “I F THE PASSAGE MAKES SENSE WITH COMMON SENSE THAN DON ’ T TURN TO NON - SENSE.” -T HE MOST ACCURATE WAY TO UNDERSTAND A TEXT IS ACCORDING TO ITS GRAMMAR AND STRUCTURE.

-I NTERPRET THE PASSAGE ACCORDING TO THE OVERALL TEACHING OF THE BOOK AND THE WHOLE B IBLE. -U SE THE CLEAR TEACHING TEXTS OF THE N EW T ESTAMENT TO INTERPRET ALL OTHER KINDS OF B IBLE TEXTS. A LWAYS I NTERPRET THE OT IN LIGHT OF THE NT.

Hebrews 11:18-19 “…of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which He also received him in a figurative sense.”

Isaiah 6:1-13 “It was in the year King Uzziah died that I saw the Lord. He was sitting on a lofty throne, and the train of his robe filled the Temple. ‎ 2 Attending Him were mighty seraphim, each having six wings. With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. ‎

3 “They were calling out to each other, ‘Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies! The whole earth is filled with His glory!’ ‎ Their voices shook the Temple to its foundations, and the entire building was filled with smoke. ‎ 5 Then I said, “It’s all over! I am doomed, for I am a sinful man. I have filthy lips, and I live among a people with filthy lips.”

“Yet I have seen the King, the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.”

8 ” Then I heard the Lord asking, “Whom should I send as a messenger to this people? Who will go for us?” I said, “Here I am. Send me.” And He said, “Yes, go, and say to this people, ‘Listen carefully, but do not understand. Watch closely, but learn nothing.’ 10 Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes,”

“nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to me for healing.” 11 Then I said, “Lord, how long will this go on?” And He replied, “Until their towns are empty, their houses are deserted, and the whole country is a wasteland;”

12 ” until the L ORD has sent everyone away, and the entire land of Israel lies deserted. 13 If even a tenth—a remnant— survive, it will be invaded again and burned. But as a terebinth or oak tree leaves a stump when it is cut down, so Israel’s stump will be a Holy seed.”

What did you Observe in the first four verses? Who is speaking? The seraphim When did this take place? B.C., the year Uzziah (Azariah) died What is the environment? In the heavenly Throne room, Holy of Holies, in the presence of Yahweh

Who is present? Isaiah, the seraphim, The LORD Finally, What is going on, what is taking place and what are the responses? Emotionally and Spiritually?

Isaiah is in the Holy of Holies in the presence of the King of kings and LORD of Lords who is High and lifted up, picturing God’s position above all. With the angels that made a huge impression and spoke. And when they did speak, the posts of the door were shaken and the place filled with smoke. Their proclamation was a truth to all, that God is Holy and His Glory covers the whole earth. WOW!!

Anything else?

John 12:37-38 “But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, (Believe in WHO?) that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke (53:1): "Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?"

Revelation 4:8 “The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!"

Isaiah 6:5 “ So I said: “Woe is me, for I am undone! Because I am a man of unclean lips, And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; For my eyes have seen the King, The LORD of hosts. ” ‎

Isaiah 6:6-7 “Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a burning coal he had taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. He touched my lips with it and said, “See, this coal has touched your lips. Now your guilt is removed, and your sins are forgiven.”

A live coal- The word of prophecy, which was put into the mouth of the prophet. From off the altar- That is, from the altar of burnt-offerings, before the door of the temple, on which the fire that came down at first from heaven. Adam Clarke

Leviticus 9:24 “and fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.”

Isaiah 6:8 “Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send, And who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

“Everything to this point was a preparation. Now God can call Isaiah and use him to preach His Word. The prophet is no longer wrapped up in his own needs; he wants to do the will of God. He is no longer burdened by sin; he has been cleansed. He is no longer discouraged; he knows that God is on the throne. Now he is ready to go to work.” Wiersbe

Isaiah 6:9-10 “And He said, “Yes, go, and say to this people, ‘Listen carefully, but do not understand. Watch closely, but learn nothing.’ Harden the hearts of these people. Plug their ears and shut their eyes. That way, they will not see with their eyes, nor hear with their ears, nor understand with their hearts and turn to Me for healing.”

“The nation was prosperous; why preach about sin? The “fashionable ladies” would not like it (3:16–26), nor would the leading rulers (5:8ff). When people are rich, full, and satisfied, they do not believe that judgment is coming.

Verses 9–10 are quoted six times in the NT: Matt. 13:13–15, Mark 4:12, Luke 8:10, John 12:40, Acts 28:25–28, Rom. 11:8; making a total of seven references in all. Is God saying that He deliberately blinds people and condemns them?

No, not at all. What He is saying is that the Word of God has this hardening and blinding effect on sinners who will not listen and yield. The sun that melts the ice also hardens the clay.” Wiersbe

‎ Isaiah 6:11-12 “Then I said, ‘Lord, how long will this go on?’ And He replied, ‘Until their towns are empty, their houses are deserted, and the whole country is a wasteland; ‎ 12 until the LORD has sent everyone away, and the entire land of Israel lies deserted.”

John 12:39-40 “Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: (6:9- 10)"He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn, So that I should heal them."

John 12:41 “These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory and spoke of Him.”

Isaiah 5: 24b “Because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, And despised the word of the Holy One of Israel.”

‎ 13 “If even a tenth—a remnant— survive, it will be invaded again and burned. But as a terebinth (turpentine tree) or oak tree leaves a stump when it is cut down, so Israel’s stump will be a Holy seed.”

Isaiah 11:1 “And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots shall bear fruit.”

Acts 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.".
