Crisis Is an event or experience that greatly influences people’s lives. Almost ALWAYS causes some type of change. Examples: Unexpected baby, loss of a job, moving to a new home, or death in the family.

Traits of Crises Devastating event which causes a great loss for the entire family. A stressful event that affects the entire family. An event that requires major adjustments by family members. An event that occurs unexpectedly Examples: Unemployment, family violence, substance abuse, death/illness in the family

Skills to Cope with Crises Support System – network of people that the family can turn to during crises. Communicate and cooperate while change is sought. Decide on needs and priorities; help any way you can Don’t be ashamed of your feelings – it’s okay to cry, be angry, or confused.

Family Violence Three types of abuse: – Physical – Emotional – Sexual Abusive family members often have low self esteem, and might feel unloved. Some were abused themselves and cannot deal with their emotions so they turn to aggression.

Substance Abuse -Drug Abuse -Alcoholism/Alcoholics Substance abusers affect the ENTIRE FAMILY and sometimes the family unknowingly enables the user: Codependency is a pattern of unhealthy behaviors that is used by family members to cover up a problem.

Unemployment Downsizing Might be due to a serious illness Communicate and cooperate while a new job is sought. Decide on needs and priority…help in any way possible. Anyone have a part-time job?

Serious Illness Emotionally draining to watch one suffer. Anxiety awaiting the outcome. Physical care at home is tiresome. High costs of medical needs can stress us! Seek help from a support group, friends, spiritual ties, or just learn more about the illness!

Death Is a part of the life cycle and we must accept death as a reality of life. Feelings might range from sadness to anger to guilt to emptiness. (The grieving process) Ask for support, talk to someone, cry without shame, and recall the happy times. How would that person want you to live your life?

The final word… “In a united family, happiness springs of itself.” - Chinese Proverb “You don’t choose your family. They are God’s gift to you, as you are to them.” –Desmond Tutu
