SCIENCE STARTER 1.A new mutation that occurs in which type of cell can be passed on to offspring? a. Blood cell b. Nerve cell c. Brain cell d. Egg cell 2.Which is the greatest benefit of sexual reproduction? a. Capable of reproducing by meiosis b. Ability to reproduce without a mate c. Ability to reproduce genetically different offspring d. Capable of producing offspring genetically identical to the parent 3.A main advantage to organisms that reproduce sexually is a. Being able to conserve energy b. Having large numbers of offspring c. Greater genetic diversity d. Longer life spans

a.Her father must have the hidden alleles for brown hair and brown eyes. b.Her mother must be purebred for the brown eye and brown hair genes. c.Her mother must have hidden recessive genes for red hair and blue eyes. d.Merida most likely wears contacts and dyes her hair to look like her dad. 4. Which of the following disorders is caused by a recessive gene defect on the X chromosome? a.Emphysema b. R/G color blindness c. Down Syndrome d. Tuberculosis 5. In the Disney movie Brave, the character Merida and her father have red hair and blue eyes, both recessive traits. Her mother, Queen Elinor, has brown hair and brown eyes, both dominant traits. If brown hair and eyes are dominant, which statement best explains Merida’s red hair and blue eyes? 6. What are the human blood types? a. A, Bb. A, B, ABc. A, B, AB, Od. A, B, AB, O, ABO

Skeletal System School House Rocks

The human skeleton consists of…well, tradition says 206, but who really cares? More importantly is what the skeleton does. 1.It provides support for our body. 2.Work together with muscular and nervous system to coordinate movement. 3.They provide protection for vital organs such as the brain, heart, and lungs. 4. Blood is made inside the bones in the marrow. Bones are living. They will bleed when cut and mend themselves when injured. 5.The final function of the skeleton is to provide a reservoir of minerals (calcium, phosphates, potassium, and many other trace elements), which the body can call upon to replenish depleted levels. Types of Joints 1.Hinge joints like those found in the knee and elbow allow the skeleton to extend or contract. 2.Pivot joints like those found at the top of the spine allow you to look from side to side. 3.Ball and socket joints like those found in the shoulders and hips allow you to rotate your arm and hip (to a lesser degree) 360 degrees. 4.Gliding joints are found in the wrist and between the vertebrae The skeletal system functions together with the muscular system and the nervous system to provide support and coordinate our movements. Bones are attached to each other with fibrous strands called ligaments. Many sports injuries are related to torn or stretched ligaments. Ligaments should not be confused with tendons. Tendons are fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones. Tendon injuries are also common in active people. Cartilage is a smooth, (hard) plastic-like material that is found between major joints like the knee and vertebrae. Cartilage acts both as a shock absorber between joints and as a smooth surface that allows the joints to move with less friction.

1. Identify five main functions of the skeletal system 2.Where is blood made in the body? 3.What internal organs are protected by the skeleton? 4.The knee and elbow are examples of a _______joint. 5. The area where the humerus (upper arm bone) joins the shoulder and where the femur (upper leg bone) joins the pelvis (hip) are examples of _______joints.

Closing Questions 6.__________ connect bones to other bones. 7.___________connect muscles to bones. 8. Identify two parts of the body where cartilage can be found. 9. What are the two primary functions of cartilage?
