GRADE 1 READING SYLLABUS FALL SEMESTER 2013

WHAT BOOKS ARE WE READING?  Chicka Cjhicka Boom Boom  David Goes to School  Freight Train  Sea Shapes  Brown Bear, Brown Bear What do you see?

WHAT KINDS OF BOOKS ARE THEY? They are all picture books The pictures help the students understand the words. Chicka Chicka… and Brown Bear… have ryhmes and rhythms David Goes To School and Freight Train have simple stories to follow. The five books have phonics, words and concepts we are teaching in Conversation Class: short and long vowels; animals, colors, and numbers; classroom routines and people, etc.

HOW WILL THE BOOKS BE TAUGHT? Story and format overview/ review Character identification and discussion (Who is who) Group practice Phonic and/or grammar point and pronunciation review Individual practice Comprehension questions Activities and games

HOW LONG FOR EACH BOOK? ARE THERE TESTS? We spend 4 weeks on each book. We will do worksheets that act as assessments, but we will not give formal tests. We are only concerned with progress, not perfection. Please remember that we are students are learning the tools they need to read. Every student learns at a different speed.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP? Make English a positive experience Encourage your child to talk about the books and conversations they study in school Read English together just for fun Be supportive when your child is trying to speak English with you
