December 11, 2015 Entry Task You Need: A pen or pencil Everything else stowed away

Monday: Final Discussion Before Essay Are you personally responsible for taking action against unjust treatment under the law? Yes No Claim (Roots): I don’t think it’s my personal responsibility to act against unjust treatment under the law, because in a country like the US, these occasions are fixed more often than not. Claim (Roots): I don’t think it’s my personal responsibility to act against unjust treatment under the law, because in a country like the US, these occasions are fixed more often than not. Evidence (Trunk): Take, for example, the struggles of women in the last 200 years. Has it been unjust? Sure. But evidence clearly shows that we are headed in the right direction. We have gone from not being able to vote to edging toward equal pay, which is protected by the law. Evidence (Trunk): Take, for example, the struggles of women in the last 200 years. Has it been unjust? Sure. But evidence clearly shows that we are headed in the right direction. We have gone from not being able to vote to edging toward equal pay, which is protected by the law. Elaboration (Branches): I have had nothing to do with any of this. I was not even born for most of it. And yet, I can see the benefits of this positive trend. Is there work to do? Sure. The existence of a pay gap is disheartening, but at least the people who have the power to change it (the government) are talking about it. Connection (Leaves): If it was my responsibility, where would my responsibility end? Simply with sexism? There are many areas of unjust treatment today: we can look at the black lives matter movement, or at the movement for gay marriage. Both are currently being addressed without my personal involvement. Connection (Leaves): If it was my responsibility, where would my responsibility end? Simply with sexism? Vocabulary Slide 1Vocabulary Slide 1  Aesthetic – Adj. – Artistic; Showing an appreciation of beauty  The aesthetic qualities of modern movies include lots of big, computerized special effects.  Catalyst – Noun – Someone or something that brings a change  The catalyst that plunged the US into World War II was Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.  Denunciation – Noun – A public expression of strong disapproval  A simple denunciation of violence does not seem to be enough to stop Batman’s nemesis, the Joker.  Embellish – Verb – To decorate; to elaborate upon  Of course, no lie is complete until you have embellished it a bit.  Forlorn – Adj. – Deserted; left alone and neglected; unhappy  Approaching the supposedly haunted house, I couldn’t help but notice the forlorn qualities that dominated its façade.

Vocabulary Slide 2Vocabulary Slide 2  Hypocritical – Adj. – Insincere; pretending to be what one is not  You could call Donald Trump many things, but hypocritical is not one of them; he seems to say exactly what he means.  Implausible –Adj. – Not having the appearance of truth or reason  As much as I would love to have a lightsaber, I think it’s a completely implausible wish.  Lethargic – Adj. – Drowsy; dull; sluggish; indifferent  The lethargic nature of students increases the closer we get to break.  Perceptive – Adj. – Observant; sensitive  Mothers can be very perceptive when it comes to knowing when something is wrong with their children.  Recluse – Noun – A person who lives alone, away from others  Bruce Wayne, Gotham’s rich recluse, actually spends quite a bit of time exploring the city – of course, nobody knows it.

Vocabulary Slide 3Vocabulary Slide 3  Sanction –Noun – Authorized approval or permission  I doubt that the district would sanction a teacher’s disuse of SpringBoard.  Tactless – Adj. – Without skill in dealing with people  College students tend to think that they’re smarter than they actually are, and their interactions with adults can therefore seem tactless.  Unassailable – Adj. – Not able to attack  The goal during debate and discussion is to establish an unassailable viewpoint.  Vacillate – Verb – To say unsteadily; to fluctuate  Even if you vacillate during discussion, it’s the participation that matters.  Waive – Verb – To dispense with; to postpone  Every student’s dream is that the teacher will waive at least one big assignment.
