Week 10 and final taught week

Starter Its nearly Christmas......its getting colder, we are buying presents, decorations are going up, we are eating more BUT how is it celebrated in other cultures? Can you answer any of the following:  What is Father Christmas/Santa Claus’s real name?  What is he called in China?  Who eats pepernoot and kerstkrans at Christmas? Any one aware of any other ways of celebrating Christmas?

Learning outcomes What is cultural intelligence and how is it measured? What are your cultural intelligence strengths and weaknesses? Using the knowledge and skills from this module how would you evaluate a case study?

Cultural Intelligence ‘Cultural intelligence is the capability of an individual to learn and understand another culture and then act according’ (V&B 2011 p23) Explains how some people are able to fit into another culture more easily than others Also know as CQ along with other kinds of human intelligence

Cultural Intelligence cont A person’s capability to successful adapt to a new cultural setting has 3 main components:  Cognition – a thinking process which includes knowledge about the culture and what to do in a new culture  Motivation – a desire to adapt successfully  Behaviours – or appropriate actions

How do you test CQ? A fairly sophisticated test is the Cross Cultural Adaptability Inventory (CCAI) This self report test helps identify current strengths and weaknesses within 4 critical skills areas considered important for cross cultural communication and interaction More basic tests are available on the internet

CCAI Scales and Items Emotional Resilience (ER) Flexibility and Openness (FO) Perceptual Acuity (PAC) Personal Autonomy (PA)

CCAI scale descriptors Emotional Resilience (ER)  Coping with stress and ambiguity  Accepting and rebounding from imperfections and mistakes  Trying new things and experiences  Interacting with people in new or unfamiliar situations Perceptual Acuity (PAC)  Confidence in ones ability to accurately perceive the feelings of others Flexibility/Openness (FO)  Liking for, openness toward, interest in, and desire to learn from unfamiliar people and ideas  Tolerance, non-judgementalness, and understanding towards others who are different from oneself  Flexibility with regard to experiences Personal Autonomy (PA)  Self-direction and self-reliance

Intercultural analysis using CQ Read the case study called a business trip to China and check your CQ by answering the questions When you’ve finished please log onto Moodle and complete the module evaluation for C, C & L

Summary According to Ting-Toomey (1999:272) in Rentz et al (2011) the attributes and abilities of transcultural competence are:  Tolerance for ambiguity – be an attentive listener & consider others’ perspectives & check intended message  Open-mindedness – to avoid rushed judgements of others  Flexibility – appreciate a range of perspectives  Respectfulness – towards others and their views  Adaptability – of communication style  Sensitivity – empathy to explore others’ views & experiences  Creativity – to generate appropriate and effective communication

University Challenge In 2 teams everyone make up the hardest question you can think of based on the module (that you know the answer to) Take it in turn to ask your question to your opposite number 2 points if they answer it correctly 1 point if they have to confer The winning team is the one that gets the most points and will receive the prize
