Aim: How did Jefferson’s Presidency change the US?

Do Now-Jefferson’s Inaugural Address Friends and Fellow Citizens: Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists. If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it Friends and Fellow Citizens: Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists. If there be any among us who would wish to dissolve this Union or to change its republican form, let them stand undisturbed as monuments of the safety with which error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it Why does he say we are all Republicans, we are all Federalists? Why does he say we are all Republicans, we are all Federalists? What is his point in the last sentence regarding people that disagree with the government? What is his point in the last sentence regarding people that disagree with the government?

Jefferson Quote  “The government that governs least, governs best”  With a partner, answer the questions that follow  What does Jefferson mean by the quote?  Why does he feel this way?  Based on your understanding of the quote, how will the government change under Jefferson? (multiple ways,, and be as specific as possible)

Jefferson makes changes to the government  Decreases to size of government  Reduced taxes, no direct taxes on the people  Severely reduces army and navy  Decreased deficit by cutting budget  Has a cabinet consisting of both political parties

The “informal” President Didn’t wear white wig No assigned seats at diplomatic dinners (this really bothered English diplomats) Walked during his inauguration, not a carriage ride Wore PJ’s to many meetings with US government and foreign officials

Marbury vs. Madison “midnight judges” Adams gave 58 new judges jobs on his last day in office 16 didn’t get their post by the time Adams left office Should Jefferson give 16 guys their job???? Jefferson never gave them the jobs Marbury sues to get his position

Effect of Marbury v Madison Judge Marshall rules that TJ should’ve given them the jobs, BUT,,, the law creating their jobs was illegal, so they don’t get the jobs!! Judge Marshall rules that TJ should’ve given them the jobs, BUT,,, the law creating their jobs was illegal, so they don’t get the jobs!! So who wins?????? So who wins?????? TJ happy b/c they didn’t get the jobs! TJ happy b/c they didn’t get the jobs! THIS IS THE CREATION OF JUDICIAL REVIEW, THE CONSTITUTIONAL INTERPRETER THIS IS THE CREATION OF JUDICIAL REVIEW, THE CONSTITUTIONAL INTERPRETER Power of federal government and judicial branch increases!! Power of federal government and judicial branch increases!!

Louisiana Purchase ► Congress allows Jefferson to send a diplomat to Paris to buy Port of New Orleans and as much property to the east (northern section of Florida) as possible for $10 million ► Napoleon (France) counters with New Orleans and all the land west of Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains for $15 million ► How can TJ be able to legally do the deal??????? ► Jefferson a constitutional slut? (loose constructionist?????) He had no authority as President to buy land!!! But,,,,  He decided that this was basically a treaty, which he did have the right to do

Napoleon gone mad?  He wanted to prevent English/US alliance  He desperately needed the money to restart his conflict with England  He just got the territory from Spain, so he had no long term investment in the land  Haitian revolution created little need for New Orleans as a depot

Effects of La. Purchase  In groups of 4, each person is assigned a part of S.P.E.R.M. (minus the religion)  Come up with 3 ways that each will be effected,,,, Social,, Political,,, Economic,,, Military

Effects of La. Purchase Social –↑ population –↑ immigration Political –↑ influence of West –↓ East power –↑doubles size of country –U.S. a world power??? Coast to Coast power???? Economic –↑ tax base –↑ trade because of full access to Mississippi River –↑natural resources Breadbasket or world ( wheat, corn) Metals Religious –New religions –↓ Protestanism Military –↑size of military,, more to defend! –More secure western border

Possible Problems Sectionalism Slavery issue increases Natives Spain Defending all this new land

Embargo Act-1807 England and France still seizing our ships, TJ asks Congress to pass Embargo Act –Bans all foreign trade –Goal? Economically pressure England/France to stop seizures Results –US economy severely suffers –Black market trading Non Intercourse Act 1809 –Opens trade with all except England and France

Summary- Answer Aim in 2 sentences…. Aim: How did TJ’s presidency effect the U.S.?
