Objective: Introduce faculty who have not yet written a grant to the overall process and MSU procedures Overview of the Process Finding an Opportunity Outlining your Proposal MSU Procedures and Services Overview of Today’s Session

Finding a Funding Opportunity SPIN database: MSU Weekly s Foundations database Matt parsons, MSU Alumni Foundation

Deciphering a Funding Announcement – What is the deadline for submission? – Who is eligible to submit a proposal? – What letters of support do you need/should you request? – What are the review criteria for the proposal? – What is the budget limit? – Is Cost Sharing required? – What are the page limits?

Summary of your Proposal Graphical abstract – Easily sets the framework for your proposal – Gives a quick overview of what you are going to propose Suzanne Held, EHHD – NIH Grant - The purpose of this study is to improve chronic illness (CI) management among Crow Indians in Montana through a community-based intervention.

Susy Kohout, Cell Biology & Neuroscience – Foundation Grant - We proposed to perform experiments that will contribute to the basic understanding of the biological function of VSP, will pave the way for understanding how VSP contributes to disease, and provide a potential target for treatments.

Michelle Flenniken, Plant Sciences & Plant Pathology– NSF CAREER Grant - Honey bee host-virus interactions: Investigating dsRNA mediated immune responses and virus specific determinants of transmission and pathogenesis

Raina Plowright,– NSF Dynamics of Coupled Natural and Human Systems Grant We propose to examine the role of bats as vectors for the transmission of Hendra virus, which can be fatal to horses and humans, at multiple spatial scales across the Australian landscape. We will focus on three phenomena: changes in the moment of bats as forests are fragmented and converted to exurban development, the flow of virus and its transmission through bat populations as the diets and foraging patterns of bats change, and how the transmission of disease to livestock and humans can be mitigated by changes in human behavior.

MSU Procedures and Services 4 weeks before the deadline (or earlier!) – Contact PreAward Office for help with putting your grant together – Contact your Fiscal Manager for help with budgeting and coordinating timing for submission 1 week before the deadline – Submit the ePCF with the final budget, budget justification and a draft summary of the grant 2 days before the deadline – Submit the final grant package for review and submission

Electronic Proposal Clearance Form Provides institutional approval/clearance to move forward with a proposal Identifies additional factors/components of your proposal – Institutional Review Boards (animals/human subjects), cost sharing, interdepartmental collaborations Feeds into the Activity Insight Database
