Meeting Challenges By Gail Greer

Your Assignments You will think of challenges people face, whether it be big or small, serious or trivial. Now think how hard it would be to face these challenges with a disability. Your job is to research a disability and the Special Olympics, then analyze what it’s like to over come it by competing in these events. To do this, you will use journaling, graphic organizers, and research to publish a newsletter.

Goals FOR STUDENTS I hope that students increase their computer skills beyond the basics, while gaining an appreciation of the diversity of others. FOR TEACHER I want to be able to provide the resources and time necessary to ensure student success.

Getting Started In order to have a starting point, I have to first see what you know. To do so, you will complete the K-W-L Chart below. You will keep this chart throughout this project. Let your questions drive your research. As you find answers to your questions, place them in the “L” column, which will help you with your end- product. To view the pre-assessment: K-W-L Chart

Questions The “BIG” Question (This is the overall question for your project) How do people meet the challenges they are faced with? Unit Questions (We will go over these week by week) *How can a person’s challenges make them stronger? *What kind of challenges have you faced in school, at home, or in sports? *What are some ways you are able to overcome some of your own challenges? *What would it be like to have a permanent challenge (blindness, deafness)? What are some ways to overcome them? Concept Questions (These are daily questions) *What is the difference between a physical challenge and a mental challenge? Give some examples of each. *What are some short-term challenges people face (i.e. broken arm)? *What skills would a competitor need to succeed in Special Olympics? *What is a disability?

What you will do, and what I will do. You will create a Newsletter after completing the unit. Student Sample You will use this checklist to help you complete your assignment. Newsletter Checklist This is how I will grade you. Newsletter Rubric
