 Free Scholarship workshop!!!  Period 1: Warm-ups please.  Happy Peace Week!  Wear a plain, white t-shirt on Wednesday in support of peace and get extra credit!!! (3 rd period… there’s a competition!)

STANDARDS Writing 1.3: Structure ideas and arguments in a sustained, persuasive, and sophisticated way and support them with precise and relevant examples.

 In order to review the dynamics of your compare/contrast essay, we will play ESSAY JEOPARDY!!!

 Here are the rules:  You can work either by yourself, or with a partner.  You will see a jeopardy board with different categories of essay formatting to choose from.  You can chose any category you want, but the questions at the top of the category must be answered before the questions on the bottom of the board in each category can be answered.  After the question is revealed, you must raise your hand.  Once you raise your hand, you will have 5 seconds to answer the question before the next person can be called.  If you guess right, you get candy AND you get to pick the next category for the class to answer.  You can only answer right a total of three times.

We will randomly call upon someone to pick the first category. READY???

Take notes on the following information. Title these notes “Compare/Contrast Essay Notes”.

What are you expected to do for this essay?  Compare=to look for similarities  Contrast= to look for differences Even if a writing prompt says to compare, it is also expecting you to contrast. Use your best judgment in order to answer such prompts.

 The compare/contrast essay is a 5-paragraph essay.  The first paragraph is the Introduction  The next three paragraphs are all Body paragraphs  The last paragraph is the Conclusion.

 What are the names of the four sentences in your introduction?

 The introduction paragraph:  Sentence 1 (HOOK): Make a statement, ask a question, or present a scenario that will catch your reader’s attention.  Your statement, question, or scenario should relate to what you’ll compare/contrast, but shouldn’t list the titles/characters.  Sentence 2 (EXPLANATION): Here you want to explain why you gave that statement, question or scenario  HOW does it connect to the stories that you’ll talk about?  Sentence 3 (BRIDGE): Make an obvious connection from the first two sentences to your thesis sentence.  You will probably need to know WHAT your thesis is first.  Sentence 4 (THESIS): In one sentence, list a) both of the things you will compare, b) the fact that you will be comparing/contrasting 3 aspects of these stories, c) the three points of comparison.

The body paragraphs:  Sentence 1 (INTRO.): Start each paragraph by naming the point of comparison that you will focus on.  Sentence 2 (EXPLAIN): Explain/expand upon sentence #1.  Sentence 3 (SIMILARITY): Give one similarity that you noticed in this point of comparison.  Sentence 4 (EVIDENCE): Give evidence from story #1 to prove similarity  Sentence 5 (EVIDENCE): Give evidence from story #2 to prove similarity  Sentence 6 (EXPLAIN): Explain similarity of both pieces of evidence.  Sentence 7 (DIFFERENCE): Give one difference that you noticed under this same point of comparison.  Sentence 8-9 (EVIDENCE): Give evidence from BOTH stories to prove the difference.  Sentence 10 (EXPLAIN) Explain difference between both evidence.  Sentence 11 (CONCLUSION): Wrap up your paragraph.

 The conclusion paragraph:  Sentence 1 (RESTATE): Restate your thesis statement in different words.  Sentence 2 (APPLY): Explain why comparing stories is relevant to our own lives.  Sentence 3-4 (THEME): Explain what these differences and similarities prove about each culture.

Body Paragraph #1: Discuss your first point in both subjects Body Paragraph #2: Discuss your second point in both subjects Body Paragraph #3: Discuss your third point in both subjects Each paragraph must both COMPARE and CONTRAST based on one POINT OF COMPARISON. Sample: McDonald’s vs. In-and-Out 1. Food quality 2. Price 3. Accessibility

 When writing a compare/contrast essay, you need to use certain key words to help make your comparisons and contrasts a bit clearer.  You usually want to start your sentences with these words. When comparing, use words like: Similarly, … Also, … Furthermore, … Moreover, … Likewise, … Just like _______, … Both… When contrasting, use words like: On the contrary, … On the other hand, … However, … Yet, … Though, … Nevertheless, … Although … While…
