Expectations of Year 5 The correct equipment. Focus and concentration during lesson time. Homework completed on time. Homework diary signed – any problems or issues there must be a note. Homework must be printed at home.
Uniform and P.E. Kit Please ensure that all of your child’s uniform is adequately named. Your child must have full P.E kit for each and every lesson. The full kit can be found on the Breaside website.
An Important Year Year 5 is a bespoke, carefully crafted curriculum that is tailored to prepare your child for Secondary school. After the first half term, your child will be given essential verbal and non-verbal reasoning homework. All written tasks must be presented neatly.
Homework Between minutes of homework will be set per night, in either the essential components of Maths or English to develop, support and augment your child’s numeracy and literacy. Both will be set at weekends. It is important that this is completed on time.
Mathematics All Mathematics will be led by Mrs. Wicks. Correct equipment for learning is essential. An up-to-date list will be provided at the end of the presentation.
Maths Homework Will be set on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Homework will normally be consolidating/ reinforcing topics covered in class so, if your child requires your input, please let me know. Non-verbal reasoning papers will be set regularly. Again, if your child needs help- let me know.
How can I support my child’s numeracy? Practising number bonds and tables during the summer holidays. Encourage your child to show their working out when doing their homework. Practice money skills and telling the time.

Mathematics Key information will be handed out at the end of the meeting. Please allow your child to continue with Mathletics. (This website is on the equipment list)
English All English will be led by Mrs. Carey. It is vital to read as much as possible, and select texts that will challenge and stretch your child. A reading list will be given at the end of the presentation.
Comprehension. Your child must be able to show that they have understood the text. Please ask “Open” questions to gauge their understanding. E.g. How did David feel when he realised he was being evacuated?
Spellings Pupils will continue to have weekly spellings. Try to learn a few words per night. This will help with the long term recall and use of these words. Children will be expected to use new vocabulary in their work.
How Can I Support My Child’s Literacy? Encourage your child to read and tell you about the text. A wide range of reading materials. Learn spellings. Think of a fun way to help your child if necessary. Encourage your child to use a range of vocabulary. Encourage planning before beginning to write.
English Homework English homework will be a combination of VR, comprehension exercises, grammar work and preparation for creative writing. The majority of the creative writing will be done in school.
