N/X Workshop November 2007 IST-059-RTG Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis 1 IST059/RTG025 Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis V.K. Taylor (Canada)

N/X Workshop November 2007 IST-059-RTG Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis 2 General RTG-025 is the latest in a series of NATO RTO Task Groups looking at different aspects of “visualisation” through a NATO approved program of work. is supported by a separate Network of Experts (N/X) –website ( holds NATO workshops on specific visualisation topics, usually on a biennial basis encourages the N/X to hold workshops in the intervening years on topics of mutual interest. lifespan of 3-4 years

N/X Workshop November 2007 IST-059-RTG Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis 3 previous RTGs identified network analysis as a significant and important area of investigation. example networks –information and infrastructural networks –social networks –relationship among infrastructures with respect to the effect that damage to one may have on another.

N/X Workshop November 2007 IST-059-RTG Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis 4 Objective: –produce a document to help identify where and how visualisation methodology can realistically benefit network analysis tasks Topics to be covered: –visualisation of networks and network data; –extraction/discovery, analysis, representation and evaluation of social network data from reports, messages and other data; –application to situation awareness and decision support; –application to networkcentric operations –etc.

N/X Workshop November 2007 IST-059-RTG Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis 5 Activities survey visualisation technology of potential relevance in network analysis identify and categorize promising technologies develop and deliver a NATO workshop develop a network visualisation framework support the visualisation Network of Experts (N/X)

N/X Workshop November 2007 IST-059-RTG Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis 6 Milestones: –N/X workshop (2005) on "Social Network Analysis and Visualisation for Public Safety" –RWS010 workshop (2006) on "Visualising Network Information" –This N/X workshop (2007). –Final Report (2008). “A Framework for Network Visualisation” Countries: –CAN, DEU, DNK, GBR, NOR, ROU, USA

N/X Workshop November 2007 IST-059-RTG Visualisation Technology for Network Analysis 7 Define a Network Visualisation Framework initiate the development of descriptive and functional frameworks for network visualisation. –a descriptive network visualisation framework will enhance an understanding of the commonalities of different ways of presenting network properties so that methods appropriate to one can be transferred to another; –a functional network visualisation framework will characterize the interaction of a human operator with a network representation.
