Landforms of Deposition Key Idea: Distinctive landforms result from different processes. Specification Focus: Landforms resulting from transportation and deposition – drumlins, lateral, medial, ground and terminal moraine.

Recap The three main processes of glacial erosion are _______ _______, _______ and _______. An armchair shaped hollow in the side of a mountain is called a ______. It is the result of glacial erosion. A narrow knife-edge ridge separating two corries is called an _______. When three or more corries form on the side of a mountain a _______ ______ is formed. A __ _______ valley is formed when a glacier erodes the sides and bottom of a v-shaped valley. A _____ is a lake in a corrie. A long, narrow lake found in a u-shaped valley is known as a ______ _______. A tributary glacial valley which has eroded much slower than the main valley is known as a ______ _______.

Moraines Moraine is a mix of unsorted rock transported and deposited by a glacier.

Lateral Moraine Freeze-thaw weathering causes rock to fall onto the sides of the glacier. The glacier carries the rock along as it moves. When the glacier melts the rock gets left at the sides of the valley in high ridges.

Medial Moraines Forms when two lateral moraines meet and join together. When the ice melts it will form a ridge in the centre of the U- shaped valley.

Terminal Moraines Occur at the snout of a glacier, when the ice melts and drops the material it is carrying. Forms a ridge running across the valley.

Ground Moraine The material trapped in the bottom of the ice gets dropped when the ice melts. Forms uneven, ‘hummocky’ ground.

Drumlins Smooth, egg-shaped hills. Occur in swarms Could be formed by the ice readvancing and forcing the ground moraine into piles. Could be formed by the ice hitting an object and rock building up around it. Could be formed by the glacier being overloaded.

Task Make a big copy of diagram F on page 132. Around the diagram explain how each type of moraine is formed. Draw a diagram of a drumlin – describe the key features and explain how it might have formed. Questions 6,8,9 on page 134.
