Do we accept that ABB is (sooner or later) going to be the entry level for a Leeds student – and that is the direction we should be heading towards? Are there enough ABB students out there who want to do our courses? How many of our competitors can share our aims? - are we happy with the idea of wanting to be ‘top dog’, and saying so? Was this year a one-off for UG entry? Can we up our marketing and communication effort?

The Industry Advisory Board discussed these questions last week In addition, I asked – ‘do the industry want the level of graduates implied by ABB level entry’? The consensus was ‘yes’ to all the questions The strategic direction and aims of the School were strongly endorsed

If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, then it needs to be discussed urgently

Marketing – can we do better? We have more staff and we are better able to use young people’s communication channels We have room for improvement in key areas (such as contact with potential and actual applicants, the website, explaining terminology) Accreditation We can run a summer school More school liaison We can be more positive about our position in the world We are in a good position relative to others

Items from FMC Student Numbers: University down Expenses: new e-system being rolled out shortly. Payments will be made weekly IPE Feedback Received

IPE Feedback (1) The Faculty was thanked for its plans and the efforts put into their development. The Faculty was commended for the progress made and positive direction of travel in particularly challenging circumstances. The positive attitude, synergy and camaraderie amongst the Faculty team was particularly welcomed. The Faculty was congratulated on the achievement of the Athena Swan silver award

IPE Feedback (5) The issue of potential merger between Faculties was discussed and it was agreed not to develop this suggestion further at this point in time, as there was no compelling argument to suggest that it would improve the Faculty’s overall position, either financially or academically.

IPE Feedback (7) The excellent progress made in the School of FS&N was welcomed, with the challenge of managing the growth recognised as a challenge that the School needs to consider. The HoS and Dean were asked to reflect on whether further investment might help build on the strengths within the School. Development of an MRC centre in this area was suggested as an option that might be considered.
