C HEMISTRY N AMING C OMPOUNDS

D ESCRIBING I ONIC C OMPOUNDS The name of an ionic compound must distinguish the compound from other ionic compounds containing the same elements. The formula of an ionic compound describes the ratio of the ions in the compound Remember – ION is a fancy word for charged element, a polyatomic ion is a group of elements that share a single charge

B INARY IONIC COMPOUNDS A compound made from only two elements is a binary compound Naming binary compounds is easy. The name of the cation followed by the name of the anion. Remember: the name for the cation is the name of the metal without any change (example: sodium atom – sodium ion) The name for the anion uses the suffix –ide (example: iodine atom becomes iodide ion)

M ETALS WITH MULTIPLE IONS Many transition metals from more than one type of ion. When a metal forms more than one ion, the name of the ion contains a roman numeral to indicate the charge on the ion. Example: Copper (I) has a 1+ charge ; Copper (II) has 2+ charge

P OLYATOMIC IONS A bonded group of atoms that has a positive or negative charge and acts a s a unit is a polyatomic ion. Sometimes there are parenthesis in the formula that include polyatomic ions

W RITING FORMULAS FOR IONIC COMPOUNDS The symbol for the cation first, followed by the symbol of the anion. Use subscripts to show the ratio of the ions in the compound. Remember: the total charges on the cation and anions must add up to zero

P LAN FOR TODAY Take the naming Ionic Compounds quiz After the quiz, start working on the Naming Acids handout

J ANUARY 9, 2014 – F RIDAY Objective: Students will differentiate between ionic, acidic, and covalent compounds Warm-up: What is an anion? What is a cation?
