Simplicity to Complexity in terms of line...

The Obvious STRAIGHT HORIZONTAL VERTICAL DIAGONAL Zigzag

Vocabulary Line-an infinitely-extended one-dimensional figure with no curvature Vertical Horizontal Perpendicular- is the relationship between two lines which meet at a right angle Diagonal- Informally, any sloping line is called diagonal. Curved- generally speaking, an object similar to a line but which is not required to be straight. Zigzag- zigzag is a pattern made up of small corners at variable angles, though constant within the zigzag, tracing a path between two parallel lines.

Barnett Newman, Dionysius, 1944, 67x49in. Horizontal Barnett Newman was an American artist. He is seen as one of the major figures in abstract expressionism and one of the foremost of the color field painters.

BOTTOM LINE The concept of line plays a role in compositions of music and art, ranging from the simple to the complex.

LINE What is a line in Art? Line – a series of points; an area whose length is considerably greater than its width; an indication of direction, an apparent movement. A line is a point moved or moving through space. This applies to drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, clay/pottery, and architecture. Characteristics of lines: lines can be actual or implied; a line which denotes or describes an outside edge of an object is a contour line. A contour line divides the plane or delineates an edge of a volume. A directional line points or moves the eye in a particular direction. Horizontal – often read as across, quiet, stable. Vertical: reaching up, spiritual, uplifting, rising. Diagonal: dynamic, moving. Lines can be interpreted as having expressive qualities; particular qualities – thick or thin, weighty or straight, hard-edged or soft – can indicate moods or feelings.

Talk about different types of contour lines Blind Contour: drawing an object using observation without looking at your paper while drawing the object. Pure contour: the very outline of the object, nothing drawn on the inside. Contour: Outline of the object and interior parts of the object, really just the basics showing the object without any shading. Variable Contour: Vary the width of the contour line to give emphasis and weight to the line. It gives the illusion of the line having more. Cross Contour: Follows the "landscape" of the form. Think of an ant crawling across the object or a topographic map. You would draw lines that would follow along the form. Variable lines make it look even more exciting.
