My Academic Foundation Programme – A Track Focussed on Management and Leadership Dr Jonathan Mills Academic Foundation Year 2 Doctor (Leadership and Management) Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland Deanery July 2014

The structure of my programme enabled me to get stuck into a project Applied to AFP and was successful Consisted of 3x 100% clinical rotations Consisted of 2x 6 month clinical posts, with 30% of whole year dedicated to academia. Final year of medical school F1 year F2 year

There was a clear structure in place to start my project The year began by meeting fellow Leadership & Management FY2 doctors Project titles available to discuss with supervisors (clinicians and managers) Assignment titles given for Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership & Management (via University of Leicester)

My project had two specific parts Evaluation of the impact of creating single-sex accommodation in old-age, in-patient psychiatry environments. Completion of assignments leading to award of a Postgraduate Certificate. 1 2

Methods: Data for the evaluation was extracted from three key sources Data was collected at both of these time points from three sources: 1.Incident reports 2.Complaint data 3.Data on patient length of stay. January 2013 to July 2013 (before transition) August 2013 to December 2013 (after transition)

Results: The key findings  Aggression and number of falls increased amongst males when on single-sex wards  Length of stay remained unchanged  Complaints remained unchanged  Use of the Mental Health Act remained unchanged.

There are five key next steps Complete assignments for award of PGCert. Write up the paper with a view to publication. Develop a proposal for a future FY2 management & leadership project. Commence Core Psychiatry Training in August Results will be shared with the Trust, to decide on whether to continue transitioning other wards. 1 5

My advice for medical students & foundation doctors 1.There is nothing to stop you pursuing academic medicine if you are unsuccessful in your AFP application. 1.Projects can be frustrating at times, but discussion with your supervisor/ fellow academics can get you back on track. 2.You get out of the project what you put in. 3.Maintain and continue to develop your clinical competences alongside your academic ones.
