Jan. 6 th - AP Lit Bellwork: List 5 strategies you need to employ when peer reviewing and peer editing an essay? What is the difference between peer reviewing and peer editing?

Peer Reviewing - Guidelines "As a peer reviewer, your job is not to provide answers. You raise questions; the writer makes the choices. You act as a mirror, showing the writer how the draft looks to you and pointing out areas which need attention." - S. Williams (Univ. of Hawaii at Manoa's Writing Program) Guidelines for Peer Reviewing:  Read the essay carefully all the way through.  Point out strengths as well as weaknesses.  Offer suggestions, not commands.  Editorial comments should be appropriate and constructive. There is no need to be rude.  Be sure that your comments are clear and text-specific.  Be careful not to let your own opinions bias your review.  Reread your comments before finishing; make sure they make sense and are easy to follow.  Avoid “rewriting” the essay, or turning your peer’s paper into your paper.

Peer Reviewing – What to Look For Thesis. Does the essay have a thesis that fully answers the prompt? Does the body of the essay match everything the writer stated he/she would cover in the thesis? Is the purpose of the essay clear in the introduction? Content-related issues. Is the scope of the topic sufficient? Does the writer provide enough background information? Do they provide enough evidence from the text to support their ideas? Higher Level Connections. Does the essay make higher level connections between the thesis and the text? Do they use original thought, specific allusions, or extraordinary associations? Do they make connections between the author’s writing style, the essay prompt, and their thesis statement? Style. What style does the writer use (thematic, chronological, list, etc.)? Is this style effective or does it hinder the purpose of the essay? Issues relating to style and format. Is the writing concise? Easy to read? Are the sentences coherent, well-constructed, varied? Is the level of usage consistent and appropriate for the intended audience? Is the word choice accurate? Are unfamiliar terms defined?
