Strategic Prevention Framework - Assessment Program Title Here date

What is SPF? The Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) uses a five-step planning process to guide communities in the selection, implementation, and evaluation of effective, culturally appropriate, and sustainable prevention activities.

Components of the SPF

The Assessment Phase The goals is to determine the problem you need to focus on by: Collecting data Identifying ‘causes’ Conducting a resource inventory Determining readiness Prioritize causes and select the ones most critical to address with the resources you have Developing problem statements

The Data Triangle Self-Report Indicators Youth, Parents, Community Surveys Social Indicators/ Archival Records Census Data, Police Reports, Hospital Records, School Discipline Reports Assessment Community Perspectives Input Sessions, Key Informant Interviews, Focus Groups

School Surveys Youth Risk Behavioral Survey Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Massachusetts Youth Health Survey Mass Department of Public Health Communities that Care Survey Contains Risk and Protective Factor that measures predictive of substance use

The Community’s Perspective Key Informant Interviews Focus Groups Who are the ‘key stakeholders’ involved in this issue and what is their understanding of the issues and causes?

Keep Key Stakeholders In the Loop Share your assessment findings Invite them to participate in planning.

Resource Inventory What are the current community resources? Who is being serviced? Gaps, assets and overlap?

Assessing Cultural Competence Who are the ‘cultural groups’ in your community? Are all groups adequately represented or “at the table”? Will your strategies incorporate cultural competence concepts?

What is unclear? Do you understand your role? Does it make sense? Questions?
