Examining Body Image

Defining Body Image How a person feels about his/her appearance based on his/her own observations and the perceptions of others.

How does one develop a negative body image?  Negative comments from others about their appearance  Having low self-esteem and lacking a sense of self worth  Not being able to fit into the smaller sized clothing sold in stores  Media messages about being thin and attractive  Comparing themselves to the “cultural ideal” of beauty

Media Influence on Teens Teen magazine reported that 35 percent of girls 6 to 12 years old have been on at least one diet, and that 50 to 70 percent of normal weight girls believe they are overweight.
