Hoover Dam Southwest Landform Example Michelle Klepper

Where? Arizona-Nevada Border 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas, Nevada

How? The Colorado River had to be moved and flow through tunnels. Workers built a 660 foot base for the dam. Using ropes to hold them, workers smoothed the sides of the canyon walls. The concrete was poured in square blocks.

Fun Fact The construction workers used water pipes to cools the concrete blocks faster. If the water pipes were not used, the dam would not be finished today.

Fun Fact The dam created Lake Mead.

Fun Fact On July 2, 1983, Lake Mead’s water level rose so high that it spilled over the dam.

Fun Fact The Hoover Dam has stood for 60 years.
