Qualities of a Leader TED TALK: HOW GREAT LEADERS INSPIRE ACTION

What does it mean to be a good leader? 

Key vocabulary Innovative: new ideas; original and creative in thinking Orator: a skilled public speaker Powered man flight: human flying in an airplane Codify: rules arranged in an organized pattern or code Status quo: existing state of affairs; maintaining things the way they are now Tenet: a belief Interpersonal: relationships or communication between people

TED Talk: How great leaders inspire action TED Talk video

Communication of leaders What How Why What = what we do (results ) How = how we do what we do (process, steps, etc.) Why = why we do what we do (purpose, beliefs)

Benefits of starting with “why” People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. Employees are more productive when working for an organization with the same beliefs rather than just working for the paycheck People will support and follow those who have similar beliefs. Brain biology – part of our brain that controls decisions and behaviors does not have ability to use language. Aka -“Gut feelings” Decisions and behaviors can be explained logically with words using other parts of the brain. Explain the “why” and get more people on your side! Only a small % of people are risk takers. They will be the first to try something. Majority of people are hesitant to try something new without seeing its effectiveness first Communicating “why” will bring more supporters without them having to observe first

Leader vs. those who lead Leader = position of power and able to influence others. Those who lead = Inspire and motivate. Start by explaining why; explain their beliefs. ◦Examples: ◦Martin Luther King, Jr. – belief in equality and freedom ◦Steve Jobs/Apple – belief in truly innovative products ◦Mark Zuckerberg/Facebook – belief in benefits of social connections ◦Malala Yousafzai – belief in the right of all children to be able to earn an education

Qualities of a successful leader 1.Make others feel safe to speak up 2.Make decisions 3.Communicate expectations; be clear 4.Challenge people to think 5.Be accountable for others; mentor, support others’ success 6.Lead by example 7.Measure and reward performance automatically-every-day/
