As you can see… There are a lot of different solutions to illustration. Artists who make illustrations have worked hard to develop their personal style and voice. Their work tends to revolve around a theme or a common subject matter. They have certain elements that relate all of their drawings together that make a cohesive body of work. As far as your drawing goes, you will need to illustrate an emotion, theme or 6 word story. Mediums that you should stick to are, ◦Graphite ◦Pen ◦Watercolor ◦Colored pencil The main goal of this project is for you to start thinking about your personal voice and style. What kind of art do you enjoy making and can see your self continuing to make.

The 6 word story Ernest Hemingway pioneered the 6 word story movement. It started as a bet from two friends, the first six word “novel” goes as such… “For Sale: baby shoes, never worn.” Since we are talking about illustration which is used to put images to a story we will be using a 6 word story of your own creation to create an illustration to go with that story. PROCESS Start with a word map and brainstorm ideas from one central thought. Pick one word or theme and write a six word story to inspire your illustration.

Here are some examples Strangers. Friends. Best friends. Lovers. Strangers. Dot in the sky. Dead pixel. “Wrong number,” says a familiar voice. Torched the haystack. Found the needle. “Male?” “It’s an older driver’s license.” Sorry soldier, shoes sold in pairs. I went travelling, found my home.

Requirements ◦One medium or multimedia ◦Includes one human or one animal or some kind of foliage ◦Does not need a background ◦Uses some kind of story or work to inspire drawing ◦Proposal in sketchbook complete with inspiration and 2 sketches ◦Drawings are due Thursday May 12 th at the beginning of class
