Line as value

VALUE Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. Value makes objects appear more real because it imitates natural light. When showing value in a work of art, you will need a LIGHT SOURCE.

Line as Value How can you show value with pen and ink?? When we think of ink drawings we usually think about the Element of Art: Line. Using lines we can create an illusion of value with a variety of techniques.

Hatching Cross-Hatching Stippling Scrumbling Random Hatching Techniques Hatching Cross-Hatching Stippling Scrumbling Random Hatching Contour Hatching

Hatching The most basic technique used to create value with line. Hatching consist of fine lines, all going in the same direction with slight distance between each. This distance can be narrow or wide depending on the value you wish to show.

Cross-Hatching Layers of hatching they cross-over each other. Typically this is achieved by first drawing vertical lines, then adding horizontal, and then diagonal overlapping one another.

Stippling Value shown using a series of dots.

Scrumbling/Random Scrumbling uses layers of small scribble-like marks built up to show value or texture. Random Hatching uses layers of short, straight marks built up to show value or texture.

Contour Hatching Hatching placed at an angle can create more effect. Contour Hatching is used in figure drawing, and follows the direction of the what is being drawn to create a 3-D effect.

These spheres all show different techniques Which sphere do you think shows which technique? Cross Hatching Contour Hatching Hatching Scrumbling Stippling
