Unit 2 Interviews

Aims  This unit aims at helping students learn the knowledge and language skills of having a successful job interview

Part I Interview preparation  1. Listening practice  a. Listen to 10 questions and try to find out which ones are interviewer ’ s questions and which ones are interviewee ’ s questions  b. Listen to 10 questions again and write down each of them  C. Useful tips: Listen to the recording and fill in the missing words  d. Trick questions: listen to the recording and choose the right answers

 2. Oral practice  a. Pairwork. Discuss with each other on more questions asked by interviewers and interviewees  b. Play roles of an interviewer and an interviewee. Ask each other four trick questions and get your own answer.

Part II Interview process  1. Listening practice  a. A secretary vacancy. Listen to two dialogues and fill in the missing information of the resumes.  b. Interviewee ’ s benefits. Edward Smith, the HR department manager is meeting a candidate, Joe in his office. Listen to the dialogue and fill in the missing information

 2. Group discussion  Suppose you are the manager of the HR Department, Richard Lee. According to the information of the sample dialogues you ’ ve just heard, which candidate you think is more suitable for the position? Discuss in groups

Part III Interview technique  Investigate the company and the job → evaluate what you have to offer → develop answers to likely questions → prepare questions to ask → build your confidence for the interview → polish your interview style → plan to look good → get equipped

Part IV Interview practice  Language focus  ---I ’ ve come to apply for the position as office clerk  ---It ’ s a great pleasure for me to have this opportunity for interview  ---I graduated from Peking University and my major is commerce  ---Although I have no experience in this field, I ’ m willing to learn  ---I am working in a small company where further promotion is impossible. I am capable of more responsibilities, so I decided to change my job.  ---I ’ d like to find a job which is more challenging.  ---My educational background and professional experience make me qualified for this job.

Role play  Work in groups of three and play roles of two interviewers and one interviewee. During the interview, use the evaluation form to record the interviewee ’ s performance.  One of the interviewers is responsible for asking questions, the other one for completing the evaluation form. Each group may choose one ad on the textbook for reference.
