70’s By: Rider Abercrombie, Erik Contreras, MaKayla Gierke, and Lexis Goldberg

70’s Fashion: The early 1970s fashion scene was very similar to 1969, just a bit more flamboyant. It wouldn’t be hyperbole to say that a fashion revolution occurred in the 1970s. Polyester was the material of choice and bright colors were everywhere. Men and women alike were wearing very tight fitting pants and platform shoes. By 1973, most women were wearing high cut boots and low cut pants. Early 1970s fashion was a fun era. It culminated some of the best elements of the 60s and perfected and/or exaggerated them. Some of the best clothing produced in the 1970s perfectly blended the mods with the hippies. The clothing back in the 70’s were: Chest hair, medallions, polyester, butterfly collars, bell bottoms, skin-tight t-shirts, sandals, leisure suits, flower patterned dress shirts, sideburns and, yes, tennis headbands.

70’s Fads: Lifestyle: It was very different from what it is now. People lived a lot different back then. Muscle cars would get gallons to the mile instead of miles to the gallon, nearly every guy had a poster of Farrah Fawcett on his wall and having five TV channels meant you lived in the big city. There were no personal computers, cell phones and video games were incredibly rudimentary. Yet playing game after game of Pong would mesmerize families, much as color TV did in the 1960s. Life in the 70s was also pretty affordable. A movie cost $2.50, a hamburger 75¢ and fries were just 39¢. Food: 70's Appetizers: Deviled eggs, Stuffed celery (usually stuffed with peanut butter or tuna salad, cut into bite size pieces.) Salads -- Salad Bars were VERY Popular in the 70's it was all about "choices".Main Dishes-Fondue (Meat, Cheese), Pizza Desserts- Hash Brownies --HAHA! Chocolate Fondue (dip strawberries and pound cake) Beverages-Non Alc Drinks Coke, Pepsi, Tab, Sprite, 7 Up, Root Beer Alc Drinks- wine coolers, Tequila Sunrise Fondue (meat and Cheese) Wine Coolers

Some of the acts that were passed were the Marine Mammal Protection Act, Endangered Species Act, and Coastal Zone Management. The main war for the 70’s was The Cold War. This was when tensions grew between the US and Soviet Union.

Sports in the 70s: The 70s was full of many different sporting events. Many would agree that the most notable event was the Marshall football team plane crash of The team was coming back from a game that they had just played against the East Carolina Pirates. The crash killed all of the 37 football players that were on the plane. It also killed all of the coaches on the plane. Citizens in Huntington, Ohio (where the university is located) compared it to the “Kennedy Assassination.

More About Sports in the 70s: Another infamous event that occurred during this time period was the Munich Massacre. This occurred at the 1972 olympics. This is when eight terrorist came and took many different hostages. They wanted many people to be released from jail. After negoitiations were unsuccessful, a shootout began which killed almost everybody involved in it. Famous Sports Figures: Reggie Jackson-BaseballAndre the Giant-Wrestling Hulk Hogan-Wrestler Muhammad Ali-Boxer

Technology, Science, and Innovations: In the 1970s the floppy disk was invented by Alan Shugart. Also in 1970 the daisy-wheel printer was invented. In 1971 the dot- matrix printer was invented. In 1971 the food processor was invented. In 1972 the Hacky Sack was invented by John Stalberger and Mike Marshall. In 1973 Bic invents the disposable lighter.
