Textile English TASK 3 HAVE A LOOK AT THE YARNS AND PRODUCTION- Blends

A blend is an intimate mixture of fibers of different composition, length, diameter, or colour spun together into a yarn. A mixture is a fabric that has yarn of one fiber content in the warp and yarn of a different fiber content in the filling. A combination yarn has two unlike fiber strands twisted together as a ply.filling ply Paragraph Ⅰ

Blends, mixture, and combinations give properties to fabrics that are different from those obtained with one kind of fiber only. The following discussion relates to blends, although most of the facts are true for mixtures and combinations as well. Paragraph Ⅰ

Paragraph Ⅱ Blends are not new, but in the past 20 years they have become very important. Viyella flannel is one of the oldest blends. It is a 55 percent cotton and 45 percent wool fabric that has been woven in England for many years.Viyella flannel

Paragraph Ⅱ It feels like a lightweight wool and is washable. Long Johns were made from a combination of wool and cotton. Covert, a fabric specially designed for hunting, was originally a blend of cotton and wool. Today it is possible to obtain all basic fabrics in fiber blends.Covert

There is no perfect fiber. All fibers have good, fair, and poor characteristics. Blending enables the technician to combine fibers so that the good qualities are emphasized and the poor qualities minimized. Blending requires knowledge of both science and art.characteristics Paragraph Ⅲ

Blending is done for several reasons: To obtain cross-dyed effects or create new colour effects when fibers with unlike dye affinity are blended together and then piece-dyed.cross-dyed effects affinitypiece-dyed To improve spinning, weaving and finishing efficiency for uniformity of product.uniformity Paragraph Ⅳ

To obtain better texture, hand, or fabric appearance. A small amount of a speciality wool may be used to give a buttery or slick hand to wool fabrics, or a small amount of rayon may give luster and softness to cotton fabric. Fibers with different shrinkage properties are blended to produce bulky and lofty fabrics.butteryslicklusterbulkylofty For economic reasons, expensive fibers can be extended by blending them with more plentiful fibers.plentiful Paragraph Ⅳ

To produce fabrics with better performance. This is perhaps the most important reason for blending. In end uses where durability is very important, nylon or polyester blended with cotton or wool provide strength and resistance to abrasion. A classic example is in durable press garments, where 100 percent cotton fabrics are not as durable as polyester/cotton.abrasiongarments Paragraph Ⅴ
