Jim Kotva Fall 2012

What is it?  Information and technology literacy model and curriculum  A set of basic, essential life skills  An information problem-solving strategy

Task Definition What is the information problem? Define exactly what information is needed

Information Seeking Strategies Determine all the possible sources Pick the best possible sources

Location and Access Find sources Find information in the sources

Use of Information Engage Extract needed information

Synthesis Organize all the sources Present the information

Evaluation Judge the product Judge the process

Does It Work? Forces students to stop and think about the problem before diving in Focuses on using pertinent sources Can be used in the classroom or in the boardroom

My Two Cents Teach the steps early in students’ school career As problems get more complex, need to be able to adopt these same steps Perhaps the most difficult step is the first one, task definition.
