Key Stage 2 SATs Tests Timetable for 2016 MONDAY 9 TH MAY TUESDAY 10 TH MAY WEDNESDAY 11 TH MAY THURSDAY 12 TH MAY FRIDAY 13 TH MAY Reading Test Grammar & Punctuation Test Short Answer Questions Mathematics Paper 1 Arithmetic Test Mathematics Paper 3 Reasoning Grammar & Punctuation Test Spelling Mathematics Paper 2 Reasoning Deadline for teacher assessment for reading, writing and maths is June 30 th We will be sitting a mock SAT on the morning of Friday 6 th May 2016.

Maths There are 3 papers; Paper 1: arithmetic; Paper 2: reasoning; and Paper 3: reasoning. o Paper 1: arithmetic replaces the mental mathematics test. o The arithmetic test assesses basic mathematical calculations. o The test consists of a single test paper. Pupils will have 30 minutes to complete the test, answering the questions in the test paper. o The paper consists of 36 questions which are worth a total of 40 marks. o The questions will cover straightforward addition and subtraction and more complex calculations with fractions worth 1 mark each, and long divisions and long multiplications worth 2 marks each.

Maths o Papers 2 and 3 each consist of a single test paper. o Pupils will have 40 minutes to complete each test, answering the questions in the test paper. o Each paper will have questions worth a total of 35 marks. o In some answer spaces, where pupils need to show their method, square grids are provided for the questions on the arithmetic paper and some of the questions on Paper 2.

Sample KS2 maths reasoning questions

Reading o The English reading test will have a greater focus on fictional texts. o There is also a greater emphasis on the comprehension elements of the new curriculum. o The test consists of a reading booklet and a separate answer booklet. o Pupils will have a total of 1 hour to read the 3 texts in the reading booklet and complete the questions at their own pace. o There will be a mixture of genres of text. The least-demanding text will come first with the following texts increasing in level of difficulty. o Pupils can approach the test as they choose: eg working through one text and answering the questions before moving on to the next. o The questions are worth a total of 50 marks.

The reading test will be a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test. There will be a selection of question types, including: Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’ Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’ Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’ Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’ Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’

Sample KS2 Reading Texts

o The new grammar, punctuation and spelling test has a greater focus on knowing and applying grammatical terminology with the full range of punctuation tested. o The new national curriculum sets out clearly which technical terms in grammar are to be learnt by pupils and these are explicitly included in the test and detailed in the new test framework. o It also defines precise spelling patterns and methodologies to be taught, and these are the basis of spellings in the test. o As in previous years, there are two papers, Paper 1: questions and Paper 2: spelling. o Paper 1: questions consists of a single test paper. Pupils will have 45 minutes to complete the test, answering the questions in the test paper. The questions are worth 50 marks in total. o Paper 2: spelling consists of an answer booklet for pupils to complete and a test transcript to be read by the test administrator. Pupils will have approximately 15 minutes to complete the test, but it is not strictly timed, by writing the 20 missing words in the answer booklet. The questions are worth 20 marks in total. Spellings

Writing Children are assessed through teacher assessment. This will be over a number of different genres of writing in various subjects. To ensure our assessments are accurate, we regularly moderate written work across the school, across the cluster of schools and we may also be visited by an external moderator.

How will I know how well my child has done? For the KS2 tests a scaled score of 100 will always represent the ‘expected standard’. A pupil’s scaled score will be based on their raw score. The raw score is the total number of marks a pupil receives in a test. The pupil’s raw score will be translated into a scaled score using a conversion table. Each pupil registered for the tests will receive: a raw score (the number of raw marks awarded) a scaled score and confirmation of whether or not they attained the expected standard This information will be reported in your child’s end of year report.

Top Tips Tip 1: Remember your child’s education is a partnership. Meet with their teachers as they will know your child? Strengths and weaknesses, and ask them how you can help. Tip 2: Support your child with homework tasks and daily reading. Try drawing or acting out answers of difficult concepts. Tip 3: Encourage your child to work to speed. Try timed recall of timetables in the car/journey to school. Set min challenges for example – ‘can you find the word on the page that means ‘dangerous’ you have 1 minute - go!’ ‘What is 10% of 150? You have 10 seconds - go!’ Tip 4: Make sure your child is aware that getting stuck is not a problem. Move on and give them another challenge and come back to the hard ones at the end and/or go through it together. Tip 5: Encourage your child to believe in themselves, ‘you can do it!’ Tip 6: Remind your child that the tests are important, but that they are not the only way they are to be measured. We don’t want child panicking or worried, we want them to be prepared. Tip 7: Approach a subject from lots of different angles. Software, games, activities, books, flash cards and practical applications all help? Make the revision time at home as fun and interactive as possible. As well as the revision books we’ve listed, we would recommend ‘Rising Stars Achieve 100 – SPAG and Maths APPs’. These can be placed on ipads. Tip 8: It is easier said than done, BUT do not put your child under too much pressure. Have fun – they will find things easier to remember if they recall the good times they had learning.

Sex and Relationships Education ‘ It is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of marriage for family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health. It is not about the promotion of sexual orientation or sexual activity – this would be inappropriate teaching’.

Sex and Relationships Education Will start in Term 6 week 1 Firmly built into curriculum as a unit of work like any other topic – weekly lessons. Follows the BBC scheme developed for this age group and updated from the teaching materials that we used in the past. The scheme is suited to KS2 and lower KS3 – we ensure that our teaching is at the lower end – always age appropriate As parents and carers, you have the right to withdraw your child from the unit but not from the teaching of the biological aspects of human growth and reproduction – part of the national curriculum for Science. Throughout the unit the teachers and children will use correct terminology e.g., penis not willy. Mixed gender groups for most sessions but opportunities for girls and boys separate to allow more openness. Male teacher will lead one of the boy’s sessions.
