KS1 SATs Presentation to parents 20 th April 2016

Changes to Key Stage 1 SATs In 2014/15 a new national curriculum framework was introduced by the government for Years 1, 3, 4 and 5 However, Years 2 and 6 (due to statutory testing) continued to study the previous curriculum for one further year. In 2015/16 children in all years at Key Stage 1 and 2 are expected to now study the new national curriculum. KS1 (Year 2) and KS2 SATs (Year 6) will reflect the new curriculum for the first time this year.

Assessment and Reporting Old national curriculum levels (e.g. Level 3, 4, 5) have now been abolished, as set out in the government guidelines. This means it is very difficult to compare the assessment of a previous year with the current year. Your child will still be taught with the highest expectations and cover all required elements of the curriculum, similar to previous years. The new curriculum is more rigorous and sets high expectations which all schools have had to work hard to meet since the beginning of last year.

End of KS1 Tests At the end of Year 2, children will take assessments in: Reading; English grammar, punctuation and spelling; Maths. The tests are due to take place in May of each year.

Reading Test The Reading Test consists of two separate papers: Paper 1 – Contains a selection of texts totalling between 400 and 700 words with questions about the text. Practise questions and key vocabulary. Paper 2 – Contains a reading booklet of a selection of passages totalling 800 to 1100 words. Children will write their answers to questions about the passage in a separate booklet. Each paper is worth 50% of the marks and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete, although the children are not being assessed at working at speed so will not be strictly timed.

Reading Test Continued The texts can cover a range of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. Therefore we are unable to read any part of the text or question. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation.

Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar The test consists of two papers: Paper 1: Spelling – 20 marks Paper 2: Punctuation and Grammar Questions – 20 marks There is no time limit on Paper 2. The children can request any question to be read to them.

Sample Question 1

Sample Question 2

Mathematics Children will sit two tests: Paper 1 and Paper 2: Paper 1 is for arithmetic, lasting approximately 25 minutes and worth 25 marks. It covers calculation methods for all four operations. No apparatus is permitted. Paper 2 covers problem solving, reasoning and mathematical fluency, lasts for approximately 35 minutes and is worth 35 marks. The children will be allowed a ruler for this paper.

Mathematics Continued Pupils will still require calculation skills and questions will be varied including multiple choice, matching, true/false, completing a chart or table or drawing a shape. Some questions will also require children to show or explain their working out – we have been encouraging this in maths lessons throughout the year. Both papers are not strictly timed, therefore if a break is required this will be permitted. The children can ask an adult to read any question.

Sample Question – Paper 1: Arithmetic

Sample Question – Paper 2: Reasoning

English - Writing As in previous years, there is no formal test Teacher assessment over at least 5 pieces of work Interim framework criteria – ALL criteria must be met in order to achieve the grade

How to help your child First and foremost, support and reassure your child that there is nothing to worry about and they should always just try their best. Praise and encourage! Ensure your child has the best possible attendance at school. Support your child with any homework tasks. Reading, spelling and arithmetic (e.g. times tables) are always good to practise. Talk to your child about what they have learnt at school and what book(s) they are reading (the character, the plot, their opinion). Make sure your child has a good sleep and healthy breakfast every morning!
