Presentation transcript:

Plant Reactions Starter: Write down everything you can remember about plants from previous lessons

Learning Objectives Explain why plants need to photosynthesis and respire Describe where the raw materials for these processes come from Write work equations for these processes

Key Fact: Respiration & Photosynthesis These are two important processes Photosynthesis (Makes glucose): – CO 2 + H energy  C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 Respiration (releases energy in glucose) – C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2  CO 2 + H energy They are exact opposites of each other

Measuring Photosynthesis Today we are going to look at how light affects photosynthesis We will use a water plant When it photosynthesizes it makes oxygen We can measure the bubble that is made

Underwater plants Photosynthesis underwater using dissolved CO 2 and the water around it They produce glucose (absorbed) and oxygen which moves to the surface We can catch this oxygen and use it to measure the photosynthesis More oxygen means more photosynthesis

We will set up the experiment like this

ab.swf ab.swf

Following the instructions in the booklet complete the experiment

Conclusions: What did you graph look like? Why?

Learning Objectives Explain why plants need to photosynthesis and respire Describe where the raw materials for these processes come from Write word equations for these processes

Homework: Debate Preparation Research the following: – Is there enough food? – Rising population of the earth? – How is food normally grown? – What is Genetic Modification (GM) in food? – What are your feelings on it?

Plenary: Complete this sheet in your booklet
