Short Answer Questions (SAQs) Dr. Himanshu Khatri Associate Professor Microbiology Department

Learning Objective: To know about, Definition Types Framing SAQs Advantages & Disadvantages of SAQs

DEFINITION:  Short answer questions are a system of evaluation where the response is by writing in one word / one phrase / one sentence.

SAQs : Skills examined one at a time,  Mastery - Recall, simple calculation  Organizing - categorization of data  Interpretation - graphs / tables

TYPES :  Completion type  Unique answer type  Open ended questions

 COMPLETION TYPE :  Incomplete statement  Missing words, symbols terms, etc.  Fill in the blanks  Labeling diagrams  Completing diagrams e.g. Uterine artery is a branch of Acronym DOTS means………..

UNIQUE ANSWER QUESTIONS : Example: What is the drug of choice in treatment of pregnancy induced hypertension?

OPEN ENDED SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS : Similar to unique answer questions but one or two lines/definition. Some variation in the nature of answer. e.g. What is a placebo? What is its role in a clinical trial?

Framing SAQs :  Determine purpose and content of the item Identify - topic learning outcome to be assessed (Knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis)  Write stem  Choose the style  Use simple language & Be concise  Finalizing:- Give clear cut instructions Give value of item - marks

ADVANTAGES :  Precisely framed  Covers wide subject area  No guess-like MCQs  Less cumbersome to attempt  Scoring is specific

DISADVANTAGES :  Not suitable for testing complex learning outcome  Time consuming (than MCQs)  Marking manually only
