BACK GROUND KNOWLEDGE There is a baptismal record that states that April 26, 1564, is Shakespeare’s birthday, but April 23 is often his celebrated birth date. Stratford Upon Avon in Great Britain is Shakespeare’s birthplace. April 23, 1616, is the date of Shakespeare’s death. William Shakespeare’s parent’s names were John and Mary Shakespeare. He had seven siblings. Their names are Joan, Margaret, Gilbert, Joan, Anne, Richard, and Edmund. William married Anne Hathaway and had three children: Susanna, Hamnet, and Judith. Shakespeare attended Stratford grammar school and was removed at the age of thirteen due to his father’s financial and social troubles.
