College: Michigan Michael Fred Phelps was born on June 30, 1985 in Baltimore, Maryland to Fred and Debbie Phelps. He has two older sisters. Michael Phelps and his siblings grew up in the neighborhood of Rodgers Forge. He began swimming at the age of seven to provide him with an outlet for his energy. By the age of 10, he held a national record for his age group. In the sixth grade, Phelps was diagnosed with ADHD. He qualified for the 2000 Olympic Games at the age of 15 and became the youngest male to make a U.S swim team in 68 years.
Olympic Experience In the 2004 Olympic Games he won six gold medals and two bronze medals. In the 2008 Olympic Games he won eight gold medals. In the 2012 Olympic Games he won two silver medals and four gold medals.
Career Highlights His eight gold medals in at the Beijing Games made him the most decorated gold medalist ever. During the Beijing Games, Phelps set seven world records, eight American records and eight Olympic records. His four individual world records and seven gold medals at the 2007 World Championships made him the most winning athlete in World Champion history. He was the youngest man to break at world record, breaking the 200m fly mark at the 2001 Spring Nationals.
