An Introduction to colored pencilscolored pencils

 Drawing with colored pencils is similar to drawing with regular graphite pencils. You are adding the element of color but many of the techniques are the same.  A finished drawing has many layers of colors.

Use a variety of lines Vary the thickness Change the pressure of the pencil to change the value

Applying the colored pencils in different ways adds variety

Start your drawing by blocking in your shapes. Make sure your shapes are accurate before you start using the colored pencils. Start with your lightest values and work towards the darker tones.

Layer, Layer, Layer The success of your drawing will come with patience. You must layer your colors. Use complementary colors for shading Change the direction of your lines Vary the pressure Use a variety of of color  Pay attention to detail

Unfinished orange Finished orange

Notice the directional changes in the lines on the walls.

Although there are some technical problems with this student drawing, the layering of colors is pretty good.

This student drawing shows the use of complementary colors for shadowing

Don’t be afraid to show your lines

This award winning colored pencil drawing by India Harvey shows the importance of layering colors.

This student drawing focuses on the variety of pattern and color Mark Waits

Color and Form – Color is a 3-d concept in that it gives form to objects in terms of highlights and shadow.

Are you ready to start? Remember…… Draw accurately Start with your lighter tones and layer darker as you go Use a variety of color….A green leaf may have blue, red and yellow in it Change the direction of your lines Make sure there are highlights and shadows – this will add contrast to your drawing
