FOSSIL FUEL EUNHEE CHO PRESENTS

INTRODUCTION Types of energy sources-1 Renewable : the supply is unlimited no fuel costs generate far less pollution → eco-friendly e.g. wind, wave, geothermal, solar, biomass energy

INTRODUCTION Types of energy sources-2 Non- Renewable : limited supply of energy e.g. fossil fuels, nuclear fuels

ENERGY SOURCES Wind energy (Eub and Ernest) Nuclear energy (Henry)

ENERGY SOURCES Hydroelectric (Ryan) Wave power (Aidan)

INTRODUCTION- FOSSIL FUEL

TYPES OF FOSSIL FUEL COAL -composed of plants that died ages ago -“fossil fuel” -Energy accumulated through photosynthesis -Burn to release energy -CO 2 emission -Environmental, economical cost -Limited amount of coal

TYPES OF FOSSIL FUEL OIL & GAS -microscopic organisms under seabed -easier to extract than coal -burn to turn stored energy into heat -running out … 1x 10^14L in 2003

GENERATE ELECTRICITY - COAL -Mined coal is delivered to coal-fired power plants -the coal combusted to boil water and produce steam -operate a conventional steam turbine and generator -The electricity is sent through a transmission system

OIL AS ENERGY SOURCE Fractional distillation -heat crude oil -distill according to boiling point

USAGE-OIL -Transportation Fuels (Gasoline, Diesel, Jet Fuel..) -Asphalt -Military -Fertilizer -Heating -Feedstock -Plastics -Electrical generation

ENERGY DENSITY -Amount of energy that can be extracted per kg of fuel -higher energy density, less cost

ENERGY DENSITY OF FUELS FuelEnergy denity (MJ/kg) Fusion fuel Uranium Petrol46.9 Diesel45.8 Biodiesel42.2 Crude oil41.9 Coal32.5 Sugar17.0

EFFICIENCY OF FOSSIL FUEL COAL -overall about 40% Chemical energy -> hot steam -> motion -> electricity (exhaust gas) (waste heat)(friction)

USE OF FOSSIL FUEL IN JEJU - 40% of energy production of Korea : fossil fuel

JEJU ENERGY Jeju- surrounded by natural energy sources Wind, wave, sun -> less efficient => Coal & oil power station is used widely
