Algebraic Expressions 1

Objective: Translate among different representations of algebraic expressions, equations and inequalities Essential Question: How can I translate words into algebraic expressions and simplify? Algebraic Expressions 2

Vocabulary: Variable: a letter or symbol that stands for a something else (either Known or Unknown) (or to represent other more complex operations. Something that is usually the UNKNOWN! Algebraic Expression: a mathematical phrase with at least one variable. Term: a number, a variable, or a product of numbers and variables. Algebraic Expressions 3

Vocabulary: Like Terms: terms that contain the same variables. Coefficient: the numerical factor of a term containing a variable. Constant: a term without a variable. Algebraic Expressions 4

Vocabulary Examples: 5a a + 6 Algebraic Expressions Like Terms Constants Coefficients 5

Algebraic Expressions Translate each word phrase into an algebraic expression. Example #1: twice a number n 2n Example #2: the sum of seven and a number w w + 7 Example #3: three inches shorter than Taylor(t) t – 3 6

Algebraic Expressions Translate each word phrase into an algebraic expression. Example #4: a number v divided by 30 v/30 Example #5: twice the sum of y and 11 2(y + 11) Example #4: six more than three times a number m 3m + 6 7

Independent Practice: Translate each expression: 1. Two more than a number 2. Thirteen times a number 3. A number divided by Ten less than a number Solving Addition Equations 8

Independent Practice: Answers: 1. Two more than a numbern Thirteen times a number13n 3. A number divided by 10n/10 4. Ten less than a numbern – 10 Solving Addition Equations 9

Algebraic Expressions Evaluate each expression if n = 12 and p = 8. Example #1: 2n – 9 15 Example #2: 3(n – p) 60 Example #3: n/
