2012 Boarder Parent/Guardian Communications Survey

Background Survey goal: To determine parent satisfaction with School communications and seek opportunities to improve. Survey was initiated by Boarder Parents Network Roughly 115 families (including guardians) were surveyed 203 survey invites were sent 73 completed the survey Assuming one survey completed per family, we assume a 63% response rate

Overall Summary Boarder parents and guardians are happy with the quality and quantity of School communications Parents rate whole School communications exceedingly well Parents are also happy with the quality of boarder-specific communications Slight preference for more regular /frequent Boarding House updates. Currently sent weekly to fortnightly

Makeup of survey takers 85% live more than an hour outside Melbourne 90% were parents, 10% were guardians 88% have appropriate internet access/speed for School communications 65% do not use social media; 28% use Facebook 48% would not use an online forum to communicate with other parents

How they learn about School/Boarding House news, activities, etc 60% talk to sons several times a week, and 60% say their sons keep them somewhat or very informed Most read all communications: Weekly Bulletin, website, portal, s from Heads of House, s from BPN

Satisfaction with communications

Continual improvement School must be conscious not to just accept good results. Must continually strive for improvement. With that in mind, 1.Majority of people’s needs being met the majority of the time 2.We can seek improvement by examining clusters of issues within survey that can be cost and time-effectively improved. This survey was reviewed with that perspective in mind.

Review of comments (Methodology: Comments analysed for repeated phrases or phrases of concern. Number following phrase is the number of times a comment in that vein was mentioned) -“we are very impressed” – 14 -“would like more…” – 7 (more on this next slide) -“very efficient in responding” – 4 -“like to hear from house tutor” – 3 -“not enough regular updates” – 2 -“want to know more about what’s coming up” – 2 -“never receive anything” – 1

Review of comments “…would like more…” –general information about what is happening –information about team results not just first teams –information about Saturday sport –regular updates on portal –frequent communication

Questions asked/answered Why was annual parent survey deleted ? –Changed to biennial. Feedback from parents suggested that they felt over- surveyed. This school-wide survey is complimented with niche surveys such as this Boarder Parent survey. Communications with my son on Skype? –Skype is available after school hours.
