Our Vision To produce high quality Family Doctors who are truly patient centered To build a Teaching Centre lead by stimulated faculty who are student focused To create a learning environment that is: Enjoyable/fun, inspiring/scholarly, supportive/empowering For both residents and faculty

The Brampton Family Medicine Teaching Centre Continues to Grow! The number of residents continues to increase over the first 5 years R1 1 st Year R2 2 nd Year Total

Brampton Civic Hospital The residents are doing rotations in our two hospitals and out in the community. Etobicoke General Hospital

How are we doing? The residents seem very pleased with their programs and are actively promoting the site to future family medicine residents We have just learned of our 9 new residents for next July; 2 IMG’s & 7 CMG’s

More Family Physicians are being drawn into the Teaching Centre as the number of Teaching Practices grows from 9 to10. The Faculty at WOHS are very engaged and excited about teaching at the hospital. The size of the specialist teaching faculty is growing to provide new teaching programs (i.e. geriatric, palliative care, IM outpatient, surgery) How are we doing?

What have we done since last year? Developed new biweekly educational rounds for the residents: ▫ Internal Medicine rounds; didactic and at the bedside ▫ alternating with their PBSG sessions Education Council meetings monthly with representation by residents, tutors, primary preceptors and Education Assistant Developed local awards for resident professionalism and Preceptor of the year that will be presented at our Grad night in May QA presentations will be presented locally this June at Dept. of FM meeting at BCH/WOHS Samps and SOO prep sessions for R2’s were developed We are presenting AHD sessions locally and we are planning a CBRT faculty development session for the fall of 2010; teaching ethics to be presented by Dr. Carrie Bernard We have many more of our faculty with appointments with McMaster University and we are tracking their teaching hours

What are our goals for the future? Grow to the full complement of residents and faculty Continue to look for more formal teaching for the residents (rounds, lectures, skills & drills, etc.) More faculty development for faculty to continually improve their teaching skills (we sent 4 physicians to FMF this past October 2009) Grow our infrastructure and administration to support more residents (eg. adding more on call rooms within BCH, hire an Admin backup for Jeannie) Work with MOH and politicians to try and help our IMG’s stay local when they finish as our community needs them and they can help our teaching centre continue to grow Site visits every 2 years with the teaching practices Build a new Family Medicine Teaching Centre at the old Peel Memorial Site which will have a Family Health Team with a focus on teaching residents and medical students. This initiative will grow the number of residents beyond our planned targets.

What Makes Our Teaching Centre Unique? 1.Totally Community Practice Based All Residents are out in community practices Supervision of Residents is done by practicing Family Physicians The number of community practices in Brampton, Woodbridge, Etobicoke and Georgetown is expanding to 10 in 2010

What Makes Our Teaching Centre Unique? 2.Obstetrics at BCH Residents work primarily with the Family Physician On Call Rota System in which 24 doctors share a 24 hour hard call doing plenty of low risk deliveries. The Rota docs and residents are also manning an early pregnancy loss clinic in the last year. Family Physicians, Nurses and Obstetricians are accredited in the MoreOB program and Residents can review the modules as well. Nurses are helping with the teaching of residents and specifically are running them through emergency drills; shoulder dystocia, postpartum haemorrhage etc. Residents are presenting cases regularly in the Dept of OB meetings

A Labour and Delivery Room at Brampton Civic Hospital More than 7,100 births per year (the largest obstetrical program in the province)

What Makes Our Teaching Centre Unique? 3.The Family Medicine Residents are our only learners at WOHS Residents are never bored They have the opportunity to see lots of patients with different acuity levels, ages and cultures There is a genuine interest in teaching by all of the Specialists, Family Physicians and our Support Staff

What Makes Our Teaching Centre Unique? 4.The Teaching Centre Office is Hospital Based The Teaching Centre office is situated in the middle of a new, state of the art BCH hospital providing Residents with close access to specialists, allied health professionals, medical technology, our medical librarian plus the educational support team.
