Contents: History of the English Language. Importance of English in Business Communication. Ways in Which English can be improved. Quick Tips. Just for Fun.

A short history of the origins and development of English The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD. These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Angles came from "Englaland" and their language was called "Englisc" - from which the words "England" and "English" are derived.

Importance of English in Business Communication English has emerged as the global language of trade and commerce in the past few decades, affecting many key aspects of business in the modern world. English has bridged the communication gap between all the territories globally. The English language first spread as the result of colonial expansion, and has become the standard for all important official communications in an increasingly large number of countries. Some Major Business Areas - Travel. English is required for all airline crews and for air traffic controllers. In addition, English is the standard for the shipping and maritime industries. Excellent spoken English is essential, as well as a command of the written language. Hospitality Industry. Hotels around the world are constantly looking for English-speaking staff to work at the reservations desk and in the restaurants. Many people who wish to work in the hospitality industry will study English as a Foreign Language or English as a Second Language in order to improve their English to advance their career. They should be able to speak English well and have a good written standard for standard tasks like billing, giving directions, and general business correspondence.

Engineering and Construction. Students wishing to study engineering and construction will often take specialized English classes as well in order to be able to create more job opportunities for themselves outside of their own country, or within their country on large, internationally funded projects. They need a high standard of both spoken and written communication. Healthcare Professions. Doctors and nurses from overseas will often take specialized English classes in order to have the opportunity to find a position in a good hospital in their own or in an English-speaking country. They require a high standard of spoken and written communication, as well as of very precise and accurate medical vocabulary in English. Finance. Many of the world's largest stock exchanges are based in English speaking countries. These include The New York Stock Exchange, the American Stock Exchange, etc. English has become a key language for investment, foreign exchange, and banking. Many large corporations organize and pay for business English classes for their staff.

Ways in Which English can be improved. 1. Speak, Speak, Speak Be confident and speak as often as possible to as many people as you possibly can! Do not be shy to make mistakes! The more you practice the better and more confident you will become in your pronunciation and vocabulary.

2. Read Out Loud Read the newspaper or a magazine out to yourself. Hearing yourself read will help you spot your mistakes better. 3. Listen Listen to news bulletins and songs in English to listen to the pronunciation of words. You can also learn new words and expressions this way. The more you listen, the more you learn!

4. Learn A New Word Everyday Choose a word you would like to work on and use, practice it in different sentences. Use the word until you have learnt it and keep using it regularly. 5. Watch Films Watch movies in English and pay attention to new vocabulary and pronunciation. Imitate the actors and have fun with it.

6. Make Friends Make friends with English speakers or others learning to speak English and compare notes. Talk about things that you have learnt and exchange ideas. 7.Use Mind Mapping/Brain storming Techniques when you are told to speak on any guess topics.

8. Have a Debate Debate all the topics that interest you with friends in English. Try to use as much vocabulary as you can to get your point across. 9. Use a Dictionary. 10. Observe the mouth movements of those who speak English well and try to imitate them. When you are watching television, observe the mouth movements of the speakers. Repeat what they are saying, while imitating the intonation and rhythm of their speech.

11. Until you learn the correct intonation and rhythm of English, slow your speech down. If you speak too quickly, and with the wrong intonation and rhythm, native speakers will have a hard time understanding you. Don't worry about your listener getting impatient with your slow speech -- it is more important that everything you say be understood. 12. Listen to the 'music' of English. Do not use the 'music' of your native language when you speak English. Each language has its own way of 'singing'. 13. Make a list of frequently used words that you find difficult to pronounce and ask someone who speaks the language well to pronounce them for you. Record these words, listen to them and practice saying them. Listen and read at the same time.

14. Pronounce the ending of each word. Pay special attention to 'S' and 'ED' endings. This will help you strengthen the mouth muscles that you use when you speak English. 15. Record your own voice and listen for pronunciation mistakes. Many people hate to hear the sound of their voice and avoid listening to themselves speak. However, this is a very important exercise because doing it will help you become conscious of the mistakes you are making.

16. Use Google Translate When you are unsure of a word or a pronunciation of a word, ask google! It's easy to use! Enter the word in Google Translate and listen to the correct pronunciation by clicking on the audio button.

Quick tips ~ Focus on removing the mother tongue influence and the 'Indianisms' that creep into your English conversations. ~ Watch the English news on television channels like Star World, CNN, BBC and English movies on Star Movies and HBO. ~ Listen to and sing English songs.
