Which of these countries do you think would become enemies? Why? All of your countries had different governments, laws, and traditions. What problems may arise between countries that share borders? The Scramble for Africa (handout) Step 1: Read through your information packet as a group. Highlight important information. Step 2: Your group will add two dates to the timeline. The dates you will use are listed on your worksheet. You will each fill in a worksheet and staple your group’s worksheets together and turn in at the end of the activity. Use the information packet I handed out to fill out your worksheets. You should take no more than 20 minutes to write your paragraphs. Once you’ve written your paragraphs, show them to me and I’ll give you access to a computer to add to the online timeline.

Closure: Write a journal entry from the perspective of a native African on the ‘Scramble for Africa’ journal entry handout. You have the remainder of class and need to finish this for homework tonight.

Imperialism Maps (handout & pages 3-4) Use the list of countries on pages 3-4 in your packet to color-in maps on first page of handout. Choose a color to represent the country in parentheses on pages 3- 4 and color in the handout map. You have 25 minutes to color. When you’re done coloring… Answer ‘Imperialism Map Questions’ on second page in handout. You have 10 minutes to answer the questions. Crash Course: Imperialism Video guide on page 5 in your packet Complete for homework tonight if we don’t complete in class!

Nationalism & Imperialism in China (pages 7-8) Find a partner. Don’t make me pick for you… choose wisely. One person needs to complete page 7 while the other person completes page 8. You have 10 minutes to complete your individual pages. If you’re the partner completing page 7: write internal (happened inside China) problems in the white area (China) and external (other countries were involved) problems in the gray area (outside China) We will trade information for 5 minutes after the initial 10 minute period.

The Road to WWI (handout) Pro-War vs. Anti-War Posters Pretend you are a citizen in Europe in Your job is to create a poster that represents the position on the war your group is assigned. Should include: A creative title that displays your position. Three reasons behind your position. One cause of WWI. Decorative elements to make poster alluring. Your group will present your poster to the class tomorrow! Make sure you fill in your group’s handout!

The Road to WWI Gallery Walk With your poster group, walk around to the various posters. Using the post-its, do the following: Put a + for something they did well on their poster. Put a ∆ for something they need to change on their poster. Use the same post-it as you walk around (keep this one) and tally whether you are pro or anti war based on the posters. We’ll vote as a class after you’ve viewed all the posters.
