Copy the sentence with the word in MLA parenthetical (internal) citation format. “With apprehension mounting, Charlie stepped into the unknown” (Smith 27). Write what the vocabulary word means as it is used in this passage. Draw a meaning picture to go along with the word. Example: *The word means nervous or anxious. In this sentence, the worry is increasing. Someone who was apprehensive might be scared about doing something. 2 WHEN YOU FINISH, READ!!!!!!!!!!!!

Entry # 2 Wednesday 9 March 2016 Write the day and date at the left side top of a new page in your reflections notebook— On the left side: On the right side: Find a passage in the pages that you have read so far that contains a FLAG WORD. Copy the sentence with the word in MLA parenthetical (internal) citation format. “Martin faced the disappointment with courage and fortitude” (Smith 27). Write what the vocabulary word means as it is used in this passage. Write five or more sentences of your own to show what this word means. A “show you know” sentence clearly lets the reader see the meaning of the word. It’s okay to use a variation of the word; in fact, it shows you really get it! Strong: My cousin courageously climbed to the top of the diving board and jumped off even when he was scared. Weak: He has courage. 3 WHEN YOU FINISH, READ!!!!!!!!!!!!

Entry #3 Thursday 10 March 2016 If you could pick one word that would really fit your reading today, what would that word be? Why would it fit? Think of examples from the text to illustrate why that word would fit this situation. Ideas (or one of your own!): Write a short paragraph using the following topic sentence. (Make your paragraph about half a page) (insert the word you think fits today’s reading) ______________ fits the situation in the book _____________________ by ___________________. Example: Scary fits the situation in the book Shadow on the Mountain by Margi Preus. Espen, the main character, is a part of the resistance movement in Norway. Espen and his friends start by delivering newspapers to… When you finish, READ! 4 scaryexcitingsad courageouspuzzlingunfair

Entry # 4: Friday 11 March 2016 On the left side: On the right side: Find a passage in the pages that you have read so far that contains a flag word. Copy the sentence with the word in MLA parenthetical (internal) citation format. “Josh felt a sense of foreboding as the train passed” (Hunt 27). Write what the vocabulary word means as it is used in this passage. Make a list of synonyms and/or antonyms for your word. A synonym is a word (or phrase) that is like the focus word and could replace it and have the same or similar meaning: courageous = brave An antonym is a word (or phrase) that means the opposite or is unlike the focus word: courageous = being a coward Example: Foreboding means thinking something bad is going to happen. LIKE NOT LIKE Worry Happy Dread Hoping Not looking forward to Can’t wait for this to happen Bad feeling Excitement Anticipate bad Anticipate good 5 WHEN YOU FINISH, READ!!!!!!!!!!!!

Entry # 7: Write the day and date at the left side top of a new page in your spiral—Tuesday, 15 March 2016 Do the following in a chart with four sections: Using the dictionary, please look up the definition for a flag word from the novel you are currently reading. 8 Write the word and the page number where you found it. Definition Write a sentence showing how the word relates to your novel Draw a picture for the word

Entry # 8 Wednesday 16 March 2016 Write the day and date at the left side top of a new page in your reflections notebook— On the left side: On the right side: Find a passage in the pages that you have read so far that contains a flag word. Copy the sentence with the word in MLA parenthetical (internal) citation format. “Martin faced the disappointment with courage and fortitude” (Smith 27). Write what the vocabulary word means as it is used in this passage. Make a list of synonyms and antonyms that might go with this word. Entry # 10 Friday 18 March 2016 Write the day and date at the left side top of a new page in your reflections notebook— On the left side: On the right side: Find a passage in the pages that you have read so far that contains a flag word. Copy the sentence with the word in MLA parenthetical (internal) citation format. “His fortitude in a tough situation was well-known” (Smith 27). Write what the vocabulary word means as it is used in this passage. Who might use this word in real life? When might this word be used? Why did the author choose this word? What other words might be used with this word? Example: The author used this word once before with courage. I think it means being strong and tough. It could be used to describe an athlete in sports or when someone is facing a tough challenge. The author probably used this because it gets a reader to pay more attention than just saying a normal word like strength. I think some words or phrases that go with this might be— Being tough Not giving up Determined Stubborn Having guts (or braveness, courage) 11 WHEN YOU FINISH, READ!!!!!!!!!!!!
