What influences people to take part in sport or activities? What influenced you? Discuss

Cultural factors Disability – resources and opportunities for disabled people to take part in sport are increasing but more availability is still needed. Age – In sport it is good to start young although some events have age restrictions. Work, family responsibilities and health reasons may prevent older people. Gender – better now but some activities are still single sex......netball, cricket and football Race – ethnic background e.g. fewer black people playing tennis and golf than football

Health and wellbeing Illness and health problems – e.g. people who have asthma may not be able to take part in long distance running but may cope well with swimming.

Image Fashion – getting the ‘right’ equipment – can be very expensive and sales can be influenced by the time of year. Media Coverage – e.g. the London Marathon inspires people to take part This is a positive example

Resources Availability – suitable facilities e.g. sports hall and resources like equipment must be available Location – some areas may not have any facilities for certain sports Access – facilities......need to be able accessed by public transport, bike or foot. Rural areas? Time – facilities need to be available at the right time – evenings, weekends and school holidays

People Family -Children often take part in the same activities as their parents. Peers- The influence of the peer group with the encouragement and support of there friends. Role models

Role Models in Sport Role models are people whose actions are emulated by others. They can inspire and motivate people take up a sport. Task: Who is your role model in sport and why?
