Presentation transcript:

In-text citations If you are quoting from a book, you must provide the following information: -the author’s name AND -the page where you found the quote

Here is the top of page 4 from The Pearl: If you were to quote words on this page, you would have to include the following pieces of information: Steinbeck is the author the quote is on page 4

There are 2 different ways to write this information. #1: OR #2: Both are correct!

In the first example, the author is in the beginning of the sentence and the page number is in the parentheses. In the second example, BOTH the author AND the page number are in the parentheses.

What if you have more than one author? Smith, Yang, and Moore argue that tougher gun control is not needed in the United States (76). The authors state "Tighter gun control in the United States erodes Second Amendment rights" (Smith, Yang, and Moore 76).

But… If the source is from the internet, DO NOT provide the page number. Just provide the authors. Smith, Yang, and Moore argue that tougher gun control is not needed in the United States. OR The authors state "Tighter gun control in the United States erodes Second Amendment rights" (Smith, Yang, and Moore).

If you don’t know the author, write “Title of Article” or Title of Website. The authors of the recipe state, “First heat the oven” (“How to Make Vegetarian Chili.”
