While planning for his inauguration, Dr. Corts realized the University had no mace. So that the Marshall would have something to carry, he had the workers in Physical Plant make this 18 inch wooden one. It had the Metallic seal of the university embedded in it and was festooned with red and blue ribbons.

First use of new Mace Presented to the public by Dr. Corts at the Candlelight Dinner, May 20, First carried by Dr. Sigurd Bryan, Armstrong Professor of Religion, at Baccalaureate that same evening. Borne by Dr. David Vess, Professor of Religion, at Commencement the next day.

Do not touch the mace. Always wear gloves, and wrap in polishing cloth when not in use.
