WATER SAFETY

Places That We Swim Swimming Pools Lakes Rivers Oceans

Question To Ponder Why should you never push someone else into a body of water? Why should you never swim alone? Why is it important to check with a responsible adult before diving into a body of water? What should you do if you are swimming and you see lightning?

Rules For Swimming Safely Follow pool or beach rules. Never swim alone. Make sure that a lifeguard or other responsible adult is nearby. Walk, don’t run while at a pool. Don’t push others into a body of water.

Rules Continued……. Don’t dive into water without checking the water depth with a responsible adult. Diving into shallow water can cause permanent injury. Avoid getting tired and cold when you swim. It can put you in danger of drowning. Do not swim when thunderstorms threaten. People can be killed if lightning strikes the water. Lightning is flashes of light caused by electricity in the air. The electricity may be moving between clouds or between clouds and the ground.

Prevent Drowning Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) properly when you are on a boat. A PFD helps you float. If you fall into the water, try to relax. If you struggle, the PFD may not be able to keep you facing up.

HELP and HUDDLE Tips that help you if you fall into deep water. Keep you head above water. Most people lose body heat quickly. To save body heat, don’t struggle or even try to swim towarddshore. Pull you knees up and keep your ars close to your body. This the the HELP (HEAT ESCAPE LESSENING POSTURE) position. If there are two or more of you in the waterm huddle lightly together to save the body heat until help arrives.

Survival Floating Back Floating- Lie flat on your back. Keep your head above water. Move your arms slowly from side to side. Kick slightly. Survival Floating: Inhale. Curl up by tucking knees into chest. Bring your head above the water to breathe. Stay above water and breathe for a few minutes. Curl up again to rest.
