Wednesday 24 th February 2016 Year 6 Key Stage 2 National Assessments Meeting

What are the Key Stage 2 National Assessments? The Key Stage 2 National Assessments are standardised tests that are taken by children in Year 6. A new national curriculum was introduced in As a result, the Standards and Testing Agency (STA) has changed the tests so that they assess against the new curriculum. Pupils will take the new tests for the first time in May Children are assessed in: - Reading - Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) - Maths

Who will take the tests? All children in Year 6 will take the tests unless they are working well below age related expectations. For those who do not take the test, teachers will make a judgement at the end of KS2 based on the learning completed in class throughout the year. We have been using sample questions and formats throughout the year so children are familiar with question layouts and vocabulary.

The Tests The Key Stage 2 National Assessments will take place the week beginning 9 th May. The tests will be: – Reading (60 minutes) – Spelling (15 minutes) – Punctuation and Grammar (45 minutes) – Mathematics - Arithmetic (30 minutes) – Mathematics - 2 problem solving and reasoning papers (40 minutes each)

The Tests Monday 9 May - English reading test Tuesday 10 May - English SPAG Paper 1: spelling and English SPAG Paper 2: questions Wednesday 11 May - Mathematics Paper 1: arithmetic and Mathematics Paper 2: problem solving and reasoning Thursday 12 May - Mathematics Paper 3: problem solving and reasoning Friday 13 May – Fun day!!

Reading Questions are designed to assess the comprehension and understanding of a child’s reading. Some questions are multiple choice or selected response, others require short answers and some require an extended response or explanation. Some questions need to have evidence from the text. o E.g. Find and copy a phrase. o Give evidence to support your opinion.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling The spelling test contains 20 words. The punctuation and grammar test includes multiple choice questions and short answer questions.

Maths The maths tests have undergone the biggest change. The arithmetic paper covers calculation methods for all operations and includes fractions, decimals and percentages. The problem solving and reasoning papers still require calculation skills but children will need to answer the questions in context and decide what is required to find a solution.

The Results Your child will receive a raw score, a scaled score and an explanation of whether or not they attained the national standard. The scaled score to represent the national standard will be 100. Your child’s raw score will be converted to a scaled score, either at, above or below 100.

The Results A child who achieves the “national standard” will be judged to have demonstrated sufficient knowledge in the areas assessed by the tests. A child awarded a scaled score of 100+ is judged to have met the ‘national standard’ or exceeded in the area judged by the test. A child awarded a scaled score of less than 100 is judged to have not yet met the national standard and performed below expectation for their age.

The Results You will receive your child’s results in their report. In their report, you will also get a teacher assessment for reading, writing and mathematics. Your child’s class teacher has been assessing them throughout the year. The teacher assessment grading will be: – Not working at the expected standard – Working at the expected standard – Working at greater depth within the expected standard

How to support your child At the end of the meeting, you can collect an English and Maths revision guide. Ensure that your child has the best possible attendance at school. If they are feeling poorly – send them in for the test, then if they are still poorly, they can be sent to the office. Support your child – have regular practise with reading, spellings and arithmetic. Question what your child is reading – the characters, the plot, their opinion. Make sure your child has a good night sleep and a healthy yummy breakfast!
