What you should know about SJVA…. SJVA is an inquiry based charter school. What does that mean? Your child will be asked to complete several inquiry projects this year. Also, many of our classroom tasks will have a focus on inquiry and research. Our school requires parent involvement. Some examples include: Take her/him to the library. Take home projects such as cutting our classroom materials. Participating in school events, such as the Wolf Run. Making sure your child keeps up with homework.

Here is a small sample of what we will be learning this year! Science:  Rocks and Minerals  Electricity and Magnetism Math:  Operations on fractions  Understanding and using decimals Social Studies:  Gold Rush  Missions  California Regions  Native Californians English/Language Arts:  Understanding and using non fiction (informational) text  Inferring information from fiction and non-fiction sources  Demonstrating an age appropriate command of standard English Thank you for allowing me to share your most precious resource! For more detailed information, I have included a kid-friendly version of our standards on my website.

Homework Every night your child will have:  Spelling - Choose an activity each night on the Spelling Menu unless pre-test is passed with 100% on Monday.  Math - At least one page  Reading - Read 1 page passage and follow Reading Menu Occasionally, your child may have:  Science - Research or projects  Social Studies - Research or papers  Grammar All work is due the following morning and will be corrected as a class. Any missed work due to absence will be assigned as homework. Please check HW for neatness, completion, and sign on Student Homework Planner. Lexia and Dreambox are highly recommended for daily

20 minutes every night?! Really?

Homework….you can help! (Just not too much!) Reading and Writing  Ask questions! (ex. What do you think will happen next? )  Provide your child with plenty of reading material and allow them to choose.  Have your child read to you and have discussions about the material. Math  Have your child draw pictures and use real world examples to deepen their understanding of the concepts.  Create flashcards for memorization of math facts All subjects: Encourage your child to do the work independently. Create a routine and stay consistent as much as possible. Please circle questions (s) your child had problems with. **Please contact me as soon as possible with any questions or concerns.
